Harsh, Angry, White-hot Distortion/Fuzzes
I know that is the stupidest/most abstract/most esoteric bullshit description ever, BUT I've been thinking about my guitar sounds recently and have been gravitating away from the sludgier stuff for the most part. This is due to my infatuation with arpeggios I think, I like hearing the notes in a chord ring out and dance around each other.
So, I've been nerding out about a lot of black metal recently, and that's definitely a guitar sound that I want to incorporate a little more into my playing. I have my ridiculous digitech death metal distortion which can pull off the sound I want sometimes, but I am wondering if there is something a little more exciting you guys like to use? I've been interested in trying a good superfuzz variant too, but the only experience I had with one of those (an fz-2) seemed to mangle anything beyond a power chord into a scrambled mess.
What pedals do you like to use to get super harsh and trebley, but still retain some semblance of note definition/cut through in a band situation? I want to evoke purifying fire here guys...

I use the Artec version of this for a slightly more old-school black metal sound.

Cheap as hell and nasty sounding with a bit of tweaking. Haven't tried stacking it with anything yet, but I haven't needed to to be honest. May be worth a look?

Yeah I remember you suggesting that in a earlier thread I made like this. Very marshally sounding, which reminds me I've been interested in trying a box of rock.

I use my theSyle Umiom Distortion for this. But a pedal still in production, the Devi Ever Aenima has chord clarity but is also white hot and angry as well.

Damn, that makes me very sad to hear. I still sorta want one though, at least for my bass guitar stuff.
But the Jesus and Mary Chain seem to make the superfuzz-chord thing work well sometimes? I dunno.
I will have to listen to aenima demo, that might do the trick...I've also been super into trying a shredmaster after listening to some early radiohead again.

Try an FY-2 instead.WeHuntKings wrote:But the Jesus and Mary Chain seem to make the superfuzz-chord thing work well sometimes? I dunno
That's basically what you've described anyway.

Yeah for some reason I always thought they used a superfuzz but I know now they used fz-2s for that psychocandy sound. Any particularly good clones out there that sound super close to the original without the heinous volume drop?

Re: Harsh, Angry, White-hot Distortion/Fuzzes
So upon closer inspection, the Wattson FY-2 seems to be just that: an exact clone with a clean-boost at the end. The demos seem kinda hit or miss for me though...Some sound great, some sound like ass to me. Is this a circuit that does better with single coils?
Also, the Aenima was pretty cool, but it got a little to muffled at higher intensities for me...I already have a few pedals that have that sound covered.
This is making my brain hurt. GAS for an unknown object.
