Poll: Which guitar should I sell?

Post by colin »

Okay, I don't want to get rid of anything, but I've sort of over extended myself. I recently bought a '69 Mustang on my credit card, and the girlfriend and I just booked a ten day vacation to California, so I need to get rid of something.

So I want your opinion on what, if anything, I should sell.

The options are:

'93 Fender Strat Plus
Image

While this is my least played guitar these days, this one is probably off limits. My parents bought it for me for my thirteenth birthday (which was a long time ago now), and this things been with me through a lot of stuff. I don't think I could sell this one, ever.

G&L Asat Classic

The only brand new guitar I've ever bought. It has been my number one for the last two years since I got it, but over the last couple of months I've found myself playing it less than before. It sounds and plays great, but the neck is maybe a little fat for me, my fretting hand gets a bit sore if I play it for too long. I don't want to sell this, but currently I'm leaning towards it going simply because it would be the easiest to replace down the road. In fact, I'd probably custom order an Asat to my exact specs in a year or two if this one ends up going.

Capri Hi-Flyer

Early 70's, real cool guitar. I've only had it for a few months, so I don't have too much emotional attachment to it. But I'm reluctant to sell it because it has a distinct sound and feel to it, and these will probably be a lot harder to come by in the future. I've had this listed on my local CL for about 10 days, zero interest so far.

This is what has caused my current need to sell something, since I bought it impulsively a couple of weeks ago. I really fucking like it, so I'm unlikely to sell. Although I probably could make a small profit on it since I've since tracked down a period case, and the original pickups are currently en route to Curtis Novak for a going over (and I imagine that it's going to sound way better once those are in it).

So the two most likely to go are the Hi-Flyer and the Asat. I'm torn on this, as I like the Asat more, but I could get more for it and it's much more easily replaced (in fact I'd replace it with a custom ordered one even more to my liking).

And I could keep them all, it just means that I'll be in debt for longer than I'd like.

I think the strat or the Asat. There's no way you should get rid of that awesome mustang, and it's very easy to get another strat or tele style guitar.

The Mustang and Hi-Flyer are waaaaaaay too cool to part with. Plus like that Mustang should be the foundation of your collection, and you JUST got it!

I'd drop the ASAT... just not a fan of non-Fender Teles. Is it the headstock?

I don't like Strats either, but that one is a beauty.

I voted Strat dude. I've owned a Strat and a Tele and the Tele is sooooo much better than a Strat. Of course the G&L beats both. hahahahaha. I play bass but I think I've owned more guitars than basses. WTF.

I voted strat. The Mustang and the Hi Flyer are both cool as shit. The ASAT rocks because, fuck it, G&L is the bizzomb. A strat is a strat :idk: I mean, I understand nostalgia and sentiment, but I ran into a similar situation once when I felt guilty about selling my first guiter to fund another another one. I sheepishly told my uncle (who bought me the guitar), and he was totally cool with. He said, "Hey, I sold my first guitar for a better one, too. Don't worry about it"

I don't care for strats. The other guitars are cool.

Between the Strat and ASAT, I'd just sell whatever you can get more money for.

Any chance of selling to someone you know with a clause that if they want to sell it down the road they'll give you dibs?

If not, I'd sell the ASAT because it seems like it's sale will be inevitable once you order the custom anyway.

Thanks for the input guys! So the Strat is way ahead in the poll, but I just don't know that I could do it. I've owned that guitar for over half of my life, and it really is a great guitar, I think I've neglected it over the last couple of years mostly because I've had it for so long that newer, prettier guitars have caught my fancy.

I'm going to take a couple of days to mull it over, but I suspect that the ASAT will be the one to go. I like MEC's suggestion of selling it to a friend, and in fact I have one friend who just loves that guitar, but sadly he's perpetually broke so I doubt that's an option. I will give him first chance at it though.

And assuming I do sell the ASAT, I'd likely custom order something like this in the future (but probably semi-hollow with an f hole):

I've never really understood the point of having more than one axe......sell them all and get your dream baby and have a little money leftover. If you feel the need to have more than one just in case the other breaks down.....then your dream baby wasn't good enough. Dream bigger.
