Double neck short-scale bass & guitar

Post by spacelordmother »

I've been kicking this idea around for awhile, but I think it might be time to move ahead with it.

I've been pondering buying a stock double neck guitar and retrofitting a shortscale bass neck on top. I'm thinking that this would only entail adjusting the neck pocket to fit, routing and wiring bass pickups as necessary, installing a bridge (and possibly ferrules for string through), and making/buying a custom pickguard to cover the remains of the old bridge attachment. Any factors I am failing to consider?

Rather than buying all the parts and finishing/building from scratch, I think this would be the best option for me because I have limited access to tools and workshop space.

I realllllllllly wanted to use this as the basis: Agile TC-630

but they only sell it in checker now.

Suggestions as to other models/brands I should look in to?

Why not get the Agile, strip it & refinish it?

This might be just the ticket:

In searching, it also seems that shortscale Broncos don't have the tele headstock anymore in favor of the more traditional Fender shape. This are disappoint.

I emailed Kurt @ Rondo to see if he anticipated having the Natural or other finishes again, but alas...

Since the checkered is black on the back, and bound at the top edge, how hard to do you think it would be to remove the binding, refin the top, and replace binding?

I wouldn't bother removing the binding. Just sand the top a bit, mask the binding, spray new color, unmask binding, and shoot a few clear coats. Or start digging Cheap Trick.

The first option is the only acceptable one.

 Yeah I keep trying on option two but I can never manage it... Remember if you are spraying you don't have to remove the old finish, you just got to scuff it good [evenly] so the new coat holds well.

Good to know!

Looking at the checkered again, I noticed that it's more expensive AND doesn't come with the case like the natural one used to. WHY!>?!!??!?
