My wife will tell you that there's no way I'd buy an instrument I wouldn't take to a gig, whether it's quirky or interesting or not. There was a time when I would, but now unless it's something that can help make money, it wouldn't get used.
The only exception to that is a bamboo ukulele I bought for $50 that my daughter likes to bang on and pull the strings. But that is a different story.

I have a friend who has like 8 nice more expensive guitars that his grandma gets him. I know his most expensive one was that $3000 prs with the seagull inlays. Anyway, I only have one electric. It's a 93 mexican strat that I got for $265 about two years ago. It's the best electric I've ever played and I put a blender pot in it for a few more options. And I have a $700 acoustic that works wonderfully for me. And I still have the first bass I bought about 5 years ago. It's not that great but I've rewired it and it works fine.
And I have one nice tube amp. A bass amp that I am selling. And I'm planning on buying an old crappy amp from a friend for $25. So I'm in the nicer but fewer camp.
