ATTENTION BASS PLAYERS:

Post by nightterrors »

does anyone on here play bass through a guitar set up?

Al from Sleep/Om, John Entwistle from The Who, Krist Novoselic from Nirvana, JFK from DFA, and many, many more have all done it at one point.

I know you can pretty well use a Guitar/Bass Head for either instrument, obviously some sound better for bass, some sound better for guitar.. I know that. I play bass AND guitar through my head I have at the moment.

the thing that interests me is the cabinet set up. Wouldn't playing bass through a guitar cab be real bad on "Guitar" speakers at a high volume? or are they all switching speakers out?

I run both guitar and bass into my rig. I've got a bass cab coming. You should do the same to prevent yourself some headache

It should be fine... Guitar amps just aren't made with low end drivers like a bass amp... Bass through a guitar amp is used a lot along side a DI bass to record and not so much for live playin... An amp with 10"s or 15"s with be ideal but 12"s can have a certain sound that you can't get any other way... It's all about the movement of the speakers in relation to the different frequencies a guitar and bass make... Make sense???

DO IT...

I do this. The secret is to if you can use both. EQ a lot of the bass out of what's going to your guitar amp, make it up with what's going into your bass rig.

I'm using a guitar head and a bass cab for bass right now. Bugera 1960 through a 4x10. I've played guitar through it and it sounds totally badass. I would say that the head you use won't be the problem with either guitar or bass. But I would recommend using a bass cab, as bass through guitar cabs sound farty and pretty bad, whereas guitar through bass cabs sound fine.

This is my understanding as well. I've played through a guitar cab (screwing around) and it wasn't bad at low volume but as the volume when up the worse it got.

To an extent it's also a wattage thing.
As far as I"m concerned, the lower the frequency, the higher the wattage you need to really kick it out.
My guitar head is 100 watts, great for guitar, but not the best for bass in e standard, forget about being able to play through this at gigging volume tuned down to B.
I agree with the general consensus that yeah, guitar through a bass amp no worries, but preferrably valve if you're a valve/tube fan like me.
But to go the other way? I prefer to run into something with a bit more wattage, generally 400 watts makes me feel comfy and anything over that is a bonus.

I play a 5-string bass tuned down to A through a 100-watt guitar head every gig :p

I play 2 rigs as the norm. My Mesa Carbine bass rig and a dual rec set on destroy. Some of the best tones I've gotten live were from this setup.

The dual rec is plugged into bass cabs, not guitar. As already said, it sounds like shit as guitar cabs are not made to handle the frequencies and wattage of modern bass amps.

Like bigchiefy, I also tune down to A or sometimes "G BROOOTAL"

I talked to a guy once who wanted to put guitar strings on a 6-string bass, would that qualify?

I do practice and record through a couple of small Valco amps, and one of my favorite recording amps is an Ampeg M-15. It’s a /guitar/accordion amp with a 15 so can handle the low end much better.

BTW: The Showman was Fenders best bass amp for years, the Bassman is a great guitar amp but just ok for bass.

I play a YBA-2 through an old Marshall 410 that was meant for guitar. I don;t crank it as it's meant for recording, but the tone sure is juicy.

I've tried it before but my amp is probably not ideal for bassing.

Bass into Valve Junior into Peavey 215 is pretty cool if you don't mind not having any squeaky clean toan.
I'd like to get another 15" Black Widow and make a box to turn it into a combo.
