Joy Division is now one of my favorite/most influential bands to me, but goddamn that was difficult getting into them. Post-punk in general was a pretty hard milestone for me but over years I've come to love it.

Marquee Moon was another one. All the songs kinda sounded the same to me at first, but after a couple more listens I started enjoying it more.

That one was a real grower for me too when I was a teenager - now I'd say it's one of my favorite records ever....

I was one of those punks, in my teens, who was like "yeah, Rush aren't my bag man" and felt that way into my mid 20's and I dunno, about 6-7 years ago I got hooked on the first one, then Fly By Night, and so on.... now I consider Hemispheres/Farewell To Kings two of the most important records ever at this time. I've listened to them both almost daily for like a year straight at this point..... except for Cinderella Man that song blows.......

I've been trying to come up with something like this, but I guess i just don't work like that. Either I click with it or I don't. Sme stuff I try to get into, but usually it doesn't work. If it does it is always some sort of epiphanious situation that makes all the failed attempts at listening to the music forgotten. When I like something it's as though I have always liked it.

Wait - thus sounds like I either totally love or totally hate music, right? That's not the case at all, but if I love or hate music it's mostly determined from the first listen, or a second listen happens that works like a first one.

Examples:

Love at first sight: Bauhaus
Everlasting wtf: Pink Floyd
Epiphany: Pixies (suddenly came up in a bar in the middle of nowhere and was completely awesome all of a sudden)
Alright, but no love: Lemonheads

I think that first Lemonheads record is great.

Marcy Playground's 'Shapeshifter'. For a long time I thought they had ruined the songs in mastering, or mixing, or something. Didn't occur to me for years that it sounded exactly how they wanted it to, and it's one of my favorites now. Weird and wonderful.

still corners - creatures of an hour... I thought it was the stupidest music ever when a friend showed me and then I saw it on the recommended videos on youtube, clicked it, and love it now.

Oh yeah they did, and the stuff that doesn't get played is awesome. There's a song about shooting heroin in an oven.
