Have any of you guys found yet YOUR pedalboard setup?

Post by stripes »

when i say this i mean, you know, the selection of pedals on a board that you are so happy with that you don't change every other week. lately i've been reflecting on my addiction to pedals ( ), and am realizing that so many pedals come and go that i have really lost track of the board/sound that i really want. it literally will change every week or two, and sometimes i don't even know what my board will sound like when i hit a pedal on. i'm asking for your friendly advice on how to go about fixing this - getting my life back in order - but with a healthy hobby of collecting/trying out different pedals, and still keeping a board that i'm happy with.

I'm mostly settled on everything but the fuzz. I just love playing with new fuzzes too much to set myself down to one set up yet.

Yes & No.

I don't actually have a pedalboard to speak of, but I've found various combinations of pedals that work well together and do what I want 'em to do (depending, of course, on what I want to be doing at that particular moment.) Find a sound that you're psyched with and stick with it. You're never gonna be 100% happy with your sound, but 85% should be good enough. Resist temptation to try out every new pedal that comes out or that people are talkin' about. Make your self immune to trends and petty suggestions.

Still need to find an octave pedal and an analog delay I like...
At the moment none of my pedals are plugged on my board.
When I'm playing, I took 3 - 4 - 5 of them and jam with them.
I should go back to a full board soon.

Do you play in a band? I've found that that helps a lot because once you have a certain sound
for a certain song (especially if you've recorded it) you can't just change things up on a whim.

I have one PT Mini with my band pedals on it and another Mini that I rotate stuff around on
and use for other things. I always have 1 rotating spot on the band board for trying new things
or for new song ideas. Using the Mini helps because it keeps me to a maximum of 5 or 6 pedals.

I think I've narrowed down that I like having one lower gain fuzz and one doomy fuzz, but I change those around. Got to have a phaser, and I think the Upper is sticking around because it does awesome octave fuzz. Also got to have at least one delay.

But apart from those few constants I change stuff around quite a bit depending on what I want to do, I think if I had a band I'd get a constant smaller setup that fit that music well.

I add to stuff these days, I don't sell.

If something sticks around (and it usually does because I do my research and have a real idea what I like and what I don't at this point), it gets added to the pile. What I use from the pile may change, but the pile just gets bigger.

I'm in two bands and have two separate pedalboards. My covers board is pretty set, 95% of it hasn't changed in a couple years. My other board is for my originals band, and that has changed more, but still I'd say 75% of it hasn't changed in a couple years. Pretty much, I tend to fall in love with most of my pedals and keep them for a long long time. Fuzz is definitely the one category that I change things around more than any other.

Took me a few thousand dollars and a new amp head to realize I need one drive one dirt and an analog delay to survive. Been trying to keep it fresh though and have a spot for something fun at all times. If you find a pedal you really dig, keep it on the board. Chances are if you get rid of it you'll miss it and wish you had it back

I have major OCD when it comes to this.... I change shit up all the time.

I had a set board which I used when gigging for 7 solid years and maybe changed 3 pedals. I was able to get mostly any sound that I needed, but not necessarily wanted. Make sense?

I've satisfied my out of control addiction with the obscene amount of pedals I have around, but rotate them in and out every few days, weeks, etc.

I really haven't changed my board for some 2 years now. I've added the HOG and the empress multi-drive is just on the verge of coming on, but otherwise it's stayed the same for quite some time. When it grows, it will probably do so rapidly though..

I've had the same fuzz, phaser, compressor and delay on my board for years. I've just added a flanger and a modded DS-1 and I'm pretty happy with them. For me these days less is more. I have another delay I might swap out occasionally, and an overdrive that might make it's way back on at some point, but I don't want to buy any more pedals. I might pick up something here or there if it's on craigslist for a fair price but there's nothing I need.
