Alright, I don't know too much about samplers at all, but I figured this would be a good place to ask (I remember Sherman Sticks and I think oinkbanana have talked about samplers a few times). My limited experience with sampling has taught me... If you wanna go hardware start simple (sp202 or similar), then work up. It's about grasping the concept then building on it. Or just go software and utilize the visuals and more intuitive UI.
based on the video, i would say look into an mpc or maschine. they got what you need. sample, loop and chop and sequencer.
if u are just starting out in all this, and want to learn the ins/outs, while still having fun, i might steer clear of the sp1200, mpc60 and 3000, the sp202/303/404s. atleast initially. dont get my wrong they are dope machines, but u may get frustrated by the way they work.
do you already use a computer for musics? or are u looking at getting into some hardware?
i believe the mini KP and big ass kaoss pad sampler things have the ability to stutter and effect incoming audio. is that what you're going for, or are you looking to layer samples and mess with them individually in real time?
Ha, I didn't even watch the vid... I know those guys... I would say a 202 or 404 is the way to go... That's how you learn and they are dope machines...
yeah. i mean, it depends a lot on your setup and what makes you comfortable. for me soft synth stuff Kontakt is perfect because with loops and beats and cha i'm way more a visual person. i work better when i can see the waveform and chop it up by where i SEE the peaks and stuff are.... but i've known tons of people (most way better at sequencing beats then i'll ever be) that want to go by their ears and hate seeing the specifics.
to me that's always been the difference between hardware and software. and THAT'S why the Maschine is ridic. it's got everything about the software environment that i love with the immediacy of a well thought out hardware drum machine/sampler style controller.

What do you have at the moment? If you have a laptop that can run ableton of something you could just go out and grab a cheap midi controller and work up from there.

For music I record into a tascam 8 track thing. Definitely hardware. I'm not sure if my computer can handle running much more. It's just a standard hp laptop thing I've had for about 4 years.

if thats the case, get some software to start.
not really looking for affecting the incoming audio as much as taking pieces of incoming audio and using them as I please if that makes sense
I like the videos of Maschine I've seen a lot, but it just didn't...click with me I guess. I like the mpc's because they don't have to have a laptop to run (right?)
You don't need a computer to use the MPC or any of the Roland SP's... They work different though so watch some demos to see which one would be better for you...
We've had these threads before and I always say it's up to how you want to use the sampler... The MPC of MPC stand for Midi Production Center and is based on it's mega sequencer track count and industry know tight midi timing... If you wanna run other stuff along side the sampler then MPC is what you need... On the other side off the fence is the Roland / Boss style which only have about 4 sequencer tracks and no screen ( except 505 and 606 ) to edit the waveforms... They have more effects and can handle longer samples, more open and freeform style... I don't use computers but have owned a lot of samplers and use a MPC 1000 and a Boss Sp 505 to get the best of both worlds...

I second this. If it's gonna be hardware, MPCs and those Roland SPs are hard to beat.
