Ampeg V4 Head Value

Post by bronzetalon »

What kinda of price would you guys put on a mostly clean 70s Ampeg V4 head? He's asking $800 but I think he is way off on the value...I was thinking $500 or am I way off? Thanks for your help.

I attached one of his photos.

800 is preposterous. 500 is pushing it, but close to current market value for them. Of course, the sound is priceless. I miss mine all the time. Make sure if you are paying 500 or above it has been retubed, recapped and at least serviced recently. They are definitely not cheap to repair.

uh, $500 is actually cheap these days. The word is out on these amps. I would expect to pay around $600 plus shipping these days...up to $700 for a really clean example.
Maybe partying will help.

Word has been out for a long time. I am saying there are a lot still out there for less than ebay prices.

500 if its in solid working condition, recently recapped and teched and solid tubes otherwise argue it down

I snagged mine for $475 in 2010, which was a steal. Then they went around $550 then, but probably about $700 now in pristine condition.

That extra knob looks suspicious.

I'd say $600-$700 is about right for a clean one.
If you can find a V4B they are usually cheaper and the only difference is no reverb which is
no big deal because the reverb tanks on the V4 are microphonic as fuck.

The black knob is probably a master volume because some vag didn't like LOUD. :idk:

one on my local clist for $500 now, rebiased for el34s (bad idea since the 7027a sounds so good), but they've been fetching 600-800 regularly. extra knob...agree, it is likely a master volume (bad idea).

Back in the day Ampeg sold a box with a master volume that plugged into the Ext Amp jack in the back. They are really easy to make and only use one cable.

^but the NMV circuit sounds way better than the next iteration of the v4 that had a master volume.
