another fucking thread about cabs

Post by WeHuntKings »

so, my v4 needs a cab. i'd love a 2x15...i plan on playing both bass and doomy guitar out of it. is there something i can use for both? the v4 is the model with reverb and no lows switch. i also don't want to spend more than 300.

Just get a bass cab. It'll make your guitar sound a little heavier and retain the lows a little more. Ampeg's B series is cheap, but built well enough for me to throw around extensively for over a year without an issue.

I sometimes miss playing through 15's. They sound great with guitar

you never know if a 15" bass speaker/cab will sound good with guitar until you try it, and of course it's always a compromise.
nice Thiele or other ported bass cabs have sounded like shit with guitar, in my experience.
Similarly, closed back cabs that sound better with guitar aren't as nice with basses.
anyway, in this price range, maybe something like an old Peavey Black Widow might be your best bet.
skullservant is definitely right about getting a bass cab, though - you can fuck up a guitar speaker pretty thoroughly with loud bass frequencies.
Maybe partying will help.

They don't handle many watts, you'd have to replace the speakers. And also they are open backed aka not so great for bass

TL-806 and TL-606 Thiele cabs (1-12 and 1-15, respectively) sound pretty balling on guitar. Kind of out of style on bass in that with the old EV's they don't push the low lows that the modern drivers and cab designs will push, but not absurd. The Orange ported 1-15 cab is supposed to be a TL-606, though with an Eminence driver. A lot of times these cabs will crop up on CL for about the same as you could pay for just the speaker or less; often this goes back to DIY or small-shop build, but it's a pretty idiot-proof design. I've seen these cabs with JBL's, too, from time to time.

I don't have real experience with them, but I'd give a serious look at used Peavey 2-15s with Black Widows.

I used to have an Acoustic B200 that I used with guitar for a while. With the horn on, it was the cleanest guitar I'd ever played. Just add some fuzz! They are just over 300 new but they also have a cab/head option. I'm sure you could find the cab half somewhere.

I bought a Kustom 215 (Pretty old) bass cab off a dude that played downtuned guitar stuff through it. He was moving so he was selling it. Seemed to like it though. I used it as my practice rig (Bass) it it was fantastic. It a little buzzy now but haven't opened it up yet. I played with with two 412 guitars and a loud drummer with no problems at all. Paid $175.

Just get an Ampeg V4 412 cab. I have two of them and they work well for both.

V4B cab is a fucking beast. There is one in my space unloaded. It's HUGE! Almost twice as deep as an 810. I'm actually selling both of my V4 cabs because I haven't used them in 6 months but I'm sure it wouldn't be worth it to ship them.
