Headed to San Francisco in the morning! I'm only going for the weekend, and its for my cousin's wedding, so I'm only going to have one full day and two partial days to take in the city, but I'm looking forward to it.

Any recommendations on what I should check out in San Francisco? Keep in mind that I'll be with my girlfriend and possibly other members of the family, so I doubt I'll be able to make it to any guitar stores, etc.

Chinatown and the ferry building. The ferry building is like a mall, except all of the shops are food vendors!

Had a good night, saw some cool bands, met a group of cool people to hang out with, working my way into the "cool kids" scene in Milwaukee. It's nice to be around interesting people instead of the one's I usually just tolerate out of boredom.

San Francisco: i lived in SF from 1988 to 2002. go to the top of Twin Peaks for the view, which is stunning. The Asian Art Museum has one of the best collections particularly of East Asian stuff in America; the Aquarium is much cooler than it sounds. the DeYoung's collection of American art is quite good but kind of vanilla; the Legion of Honor's European Art collection is leftovers from after the rest of the world's art museums got done shopping, but has some nice Rembrandt drawings and an El Greco Crucifixion that'll stop your heart. the MOMA is purported to be quite good but kind of post-modern-Koontzy.

Golden Gate Park is the Central Park of the West, both in terms of its multitude of attractions (museums, Japanese Tea Garden, lake with paddleboats, etc.) and its status as something of an urban hazard zone if you get off the beaten track. don't miss the buffalo paddock. no, seriously.

avoid Haight Street, which is a dreary museum piece, unless your grandma really wants a tie-dyed t-shirt or you can convince the fam to make a raid on Amoeba Records, which is one of the nation's premier shops, a veritable music/DVD supermarket. Chinatown is a trip to a whole different world and a must to wander on foot, but IMO the best Chinese food is out on Clement. two words, my friend: DIM SUM. Amazing Mexican food can be had all around the Mission district and in various other places around the city, and Italian food is a hallmark of the city especially in North Beach. it's difficult to eat badly in San Francisco...you almost have to hunt for bad food.

don't try to drive unless you're prepared for a NYC level of parking insanity. choose your transit routes and lodging carefully; delightful and dodgy areas of SF exist cheek-by-jowl, and wandering a couple of blocks the wrong way at 2AM can mean the difference between a happy night at the hotel and a crappy night at the SF General emergency room. it ain't all pretty in the Cool Grey City Of Love.

and by the way, bring clothing in thin peelable layers sufficient to be warm in conditions at least fifteen degrees colder and windier than you'd expect for California in summer. the typical temperature in San Francisco at this time of year (June/July) is from 65-72ºF for the high, with occasional highs in the upper 70s. nighttime lows are generally in the mid-50s and are accompanied by chilly winds and fog off the ocean; you'll want long pants and jackets that'll stand up to a stiff breeze. and at any time in the afternoon the atmospheric conditions may perform their daily shift with the wind and fog blowing in from the ocean, blotting out the sun and dropping the temperature by ten to fifteen degrees Fahrenheit in minutes. tourists in downtown SF are often seen huddling together in family groups waiting for the light to change, their hands tucked under the armpits of their t-shirts and cotton summerweight hoodies and their knees turning purple as the traffic whips up the cold air around the ends of the legs of their shorts.

and if you have the time, drive over the Golden Gate Bridge--another landmark you ought to see--and visit the giant redwoods at Muir Woods in Marin County. if you've never seen them, you'll be truly amazed, and if you don't think you'll ever have the chance to see the ones up the Northern California coast, you've got to see them.

I read that first sentence at first as "peeable" layers. I wuz like, "wait? Wouldn't thicker clothes be better for peeing in?" I'm not sure what the logic behind that was, but I that's what I said to myself. Maybe because it wouldn't appear as obviously...

Thanks Dubkitty! Definitely going to spend some time at Golden Gate Park, and I forgot about Amoeba Records. I've wanted to go there for years, the gf is getting dragged along whether she wants to or not. Going to hit up Alcatraz too, I've been fascinated by that place since I was a kid.

Already packed, and I brought some warmer clothes along. I live in the Vancouver area, and I get the feeling that the climate in San Francisco is somewhat similar. I'm used to dressing in layers, and to be honest cold doesn't really bother me, I wear shorts if its over 13 degrees (celsius, fahrenheit confuses the fuck out of me).
