Fryette Pitbull UL or Hiwatt custom?

Post by GreatAnt »

I've gotten my amp search down to these two amps. Both are tremendously awesome yet I have played neither. I'll be able to play the Fryette in about 6 weeks and the Hiwatt I don't think I'll be able to play because it's touching down in another state.

The music I play is ambient, electronic post rock/metal. I would count on using the amps main distortion on the Fryette but I'd more than likely use pedals to drive the Hiwatt.

The main thing I'm looking for is lushness. Big, full, cimey cleans and full, thick clarity in the dirty.

I'd really appreciate peoples opinions on both the clean channels and how well they take pedals. Also on the Fryettes dirty channels.

Cheers

The Pitbull is pretty awesome and hey, Aaron Turner from Isis used one. But I would still recommend playing one before buying it if you possibly can. Or at the very least order from Musician's Friend or Guitar Center so you're not stuck with a $2000 amp you don't like.

Edit: Important thing to mention. Hiwatt is a classically voiced tube amp, and even with pedals will probably still sound like a classically voiced tube amp (which will probably be awesome but keep in mind what you're looking for). The Pitbull is a high-gain modern-minded monster and honestly, that kind of distortion won't be gotten from pedals.

I don't live in the states, but you can try the amp for 10 or so days and bring it back if you don't like it from this place.

$2 K for an amp would be a dream! They mark music equip up to the max when they bring it over to Australia, well most of it anyway.

The only other amp I've played that I like is the newer 3 channel duals. They got the cleans working a bit better, but still I don't know how well it would compare to an UL. I just sold my mesa mark 4 and am about to grab a twin from a friend for a good price. It's cleans are amazing but I haven't played any fuzz, distortion pedals through it yet and I've heard that the twins don't take pedals as well as Hiwatts.

I think there's a couple of pedals out there that would def give me the distortion I'm after. I think Aaron Turner used a clean amp with bass drives at some stage to get his dirty tone.

For pedals, definitely the Hiwatt gets my vote. It's got such an amazing clean tone and was practically made to take pedals.

Yes, if you're unsure or have doubts - make sure to try before you buy.

In my small experience(running a bass into one) and from what I have heard twins take pedals wonderfully.

I think the thing BF style Fenders is that supposedly the vibrato channel has a lot of top end that fucks with pedals, in addition to being a Fender and having no midrange.

Also, people say a lot of things about what Aaron Turner used for drive but I've never really seen any evidence to back up the rumors. Still, there are pedals that could get you close to that sound yes.

+1
I like the VHT/Fryette stuff. But i would only buy that if you are into using it to its Full Potential. Which Means, its dirt capabilities.
