Genre Defying!

Post by Mudfuzz »

As someone that has always liked bands that defy labeling and likes to play and listen to all kinds of music I tend to feel hedged by labels.
So post some bands/thoughts/rants about breaking the rules!

I've always found the Mars Volta to be pretty genre-defying. How the hell would you define them? Post-hardcore progressive rock, mixed with salsa, mixed with jazz/dub sections and noise/experimental interludes? Is that a genre?

This one covers most of those descriptions:

Shit, son, that's like, our tagline.

Agree with the previous posts, too. Although The Mars Volta was always fun to describe: "Imagine a DJ mixing a Pink Floyd record with Santana. Usually at 45rpm."

BUt now they have all those ultra modern lazer synth parts, so my old description dies.

I really enjoy bands that don't make you think of a specific genre. They just make you go "god damn, that's some good tunes." There's a band Free Kittens locally here, and all I can think of to describe their sound is great songs written on a Fender Rhodes... can there just be a Fender rhodes genre? Another local band that used to play kicked around a ton of sounds. In one song they go from an electronic techno keyboard to super gazin electronica... then in the next song it'd be super mellow fuzzed out nihilistic dream anthem...

EXAMPLES OF SAID SONGS:

Deerhoof f'realz. They... make fun music? I don't really know what to classify them as. Classifications are kinda stupid anyway though.

Some may disagree with this, but I I think they've completely changed the game, for better or worse (so many horrible clones):
