My distaste for Billy Corgan long predated his Devi transphobic rant, but that certainly added some bile, piss n' vinegar icing.

I actually do find his "no disrespect to the kid's in the basement with protools" dig to be disrespectful. I'm not saying that music isn't getting watered down as a result of easy access to DAWs but badly produced music is listened to by the lowest common denominator (or not listened to at all) and who gives a fuck about the LCD (well math teachers maybe)?

There are plenty of talented artists and bands in the DAW culture who don't give a fuck how many people they reach, don't give a fuck about getting rich and don't give a fuck what some self absorbed has been thinks about them. It's not DAW cultures fault you can't make a buck anymore Billy Corgan.

My own opinion:

He misses the money, but I bet he misses also the days when he could parade out there with millions of fans baffled as to how he could make and record music and albums. When that MADE him somebody. Now a kid in a basement can write and record a better song, people can download it, so they're aware someone can write a better song, and the mystery of music is gone.

Everyone's an artist now, everyone's a musician, photographer, videographer, writer, everything.

There are good ones, bad ones, and dudes who are just not to my taste, but lots of people have written better work than Billy Corgan, and the more he parades shit like 'Zeitgeist' around the more obvious that becomes.

I love the fact everyone's an artist. Am I bummed I'll never be able to own a Reznoresque abode full of all the musical equipment I could want? Yes. I'll never make my living off my work, but I'm super happy that folks can hear it without the pot luck of record labels and everything necessitating the forgoing of the legal right to my work, and the vast sums it used to take to even record it .

We live in the future. The DAW culture is awesome. Billy Corgan is just waaaaay less awesome in it.

honestly, i don't care what an artist's personal views are or what their life is like as long as they aren't into child molestation. Leadbelly killed a man; Jerry Lee Lewis allegedly killed one of his wives; Junior Wells legendarily once stabbed his bass player in the ass because he didn't like his playing. onstage. Chuck Berry was a total perv as proved by multiple arrests, most notably the one for having a hidden camera in the ladies' room of his offices, and James Brown got busted for fleeing and eluding while on PCP after pulling a shotgun on an office full of people at the building he owned. and Jerry Garcia, who the myth portrays as Mr. Sweetness and Light, was a brooding self-destructive junkie who abandoned three spouses and three children. if i judged art by the lives of the artists i'd have nothing to listen to at all. i've always thought BC was a jerk, but that's beside the point; i don't want to listen to Bill's current work because it's terrible, not because he's a jerk.
