Re: The talk bass mega bitch thread. (aka Bhendy's Starship)
For me it depends on one's intent. The old guitarist would go out and buy crap without talking to anyone and then hinted around that whe should pay him some money for it's use. In this case it was a cheap PA that would only really be good for practice. I didn't use it all. It wasn't the bands of course, it was his. So basically he want us to pay or his purchaces. I didn't like that at all. However, had he just talked to all of us and we agreed on some sort of arrangement I would have been fine with it.

I'm basically the manager. They all know I will front them money for shit....but also know I'll be taking it out of their cut at the gigs.
It's worked out beautiful so far (Jaeger nights excluded).

I do the same thing. I'm basically in charge of all band gear purchases (except for the guitarist's guitars and amps), and I usually front everything and then take everyone else's share out of our gig money as we get paid. I haven't really been burnt yet, because we have a pretty regular gigging schedule, so I know roughly how long it will take to get all my money back every time I front something. When we upgraded our PA last fall, I fronted over a grand for two new power amps, the rack/flight case, and the mixer. That was rough to do all at once, but I had all my money back after 3 gigs.

Re: The talk bass mega bitch thread. (aka Bhendy's Starship)
lol. yeah, but it's a Crate so.... no worries.
i'm not feeling taken advatage of at ALL. i've been in situations where it DID turn into that. my last band actually. it got to where my singer from the last band was pocketing all the show money and then expecting me to front for $2,000 producer hold fees and studio shit. this situation, is NOT that. we are really clicking, i like both of them a lot, and they've never asked me for any thing. i just know that, neither of them are broke, but i've got the extra funds to set us up with better gear. which.... makes me as happy as blowing the money on me.
i'm not worried about peeps getting over on me, i'm more worried about making shits weird for them i guess?

behndy, it's only weird if you feel weird about it. If everyone's fine with it, there's no problem.

I'm not overly concerned with that. Other than me, the other three have been friends for like 25 years. Me for about 15. It would be really weird for one of them to screw us over.

Ah, makes sense to me. Money can get in the way of everything is why I asked. Someone, at some point, is going to have to pay and am interested in how everyone works that out...

I wouldn't do it. People tend to have weird emotions about money and if they're immature and/or stupid, they will possibly:
a) bail
b) make worse music cuz they'll always feel like they owe you something and thing about
c) not being able to focus on the things they want to express cuz they'll try to make it up to you by letting you be in the spotlight
d) they'll feel pressured
If you buy it for yourself and present it like:
"Hey, I've got this thing at home, you can use it but you'll have to carry it back to my home after rehearsal."
You may pull out without consequences.
Hell I don't know. But I would be careful nonetheless.

Re: The talk bass mega bitch thread. (aka Bhendy's Starship)
This guy was looking for an overdrive and he made a comment about the bass knob on the effect pedal (It has bass, mid, and treble knobs)...
So I asked him, "Out of curiosity... What difference does it make where the bass knob is? If it's not maxed and leaving you wanting, does it matter if it's at 3:00 or 9:00?"
He responded,
I'm trying to understand the last statement. Does it make sense to you? As far as fewer knobs live... I guess it would mattter if you've never used the pedal before but otherwise if something sounds as if it's missing I know what knobs I need to turn to get it to where I want it. However, I'm still pretty new so I know I don't know everything.

hypothetically i get the Less To Adjust Is Better Live thing, but yeah, just learn the pedal. then that's not an issue.
hurm. so far, everything that we use besides the drums and the singer's voice is mine, but a lot of that is that i've accrued silly bits of gear over the years, so most of it is stuff that would be laying around my house unused (recording laptop, PA, midi controllers, some mics) or is my bass stuff. lately i've bought a few things for a specific need we had that i wanted to fill now rathe than later, and it wasn't a financial stretch for me to do it. so i'm cool with it. and it's not like i'm going to be raining new gear on people every practice. it's really just the essentials, stuff that i want us to be able to do. i'll probably put that out there, something like, "i'm not trying to make it weird, i just want us to have this equipment available.". if it bothers them, they can offer to pay me back and it's theirs, or it can just be my gear other people use. i don't care, long as everybody's comfy and cuddly and all.

See...I'm going to say the opposite of alexa.. It's like when I get new cleats or even a jersey, I run harder. Something about that new better equipment just makes it fresh. I bought my rhythm an EQD Hoof (he'll pay me back next gig) and he's been practicing nonstop. He's a good kid. Not flighty as a personality issue thing but a little bit spaced out at times. He's been all focused. It's like this new sound he's getting has given him confidence and my trust in him has given him more. I kinda take that mentor role in the band, though.....counselor/band director me.

I thought "bass player" was just a codeword for "roadie"...? You know, like trucker slang.
