algal bloom and old amp issues

Post by 100 dollar cars »

algal bloom question..strange happenings.

ok, so i recently got(for a TOTAL steal) a 1966 gibson GA-5...amazing sounding amp, for sure.. but i have an issue. my algal bloom doesn't always work with it. when the effect is bypassed, it plays through just fine, but when i engage it, nothing, no sound at all.

now having said that, it works every time and sounds fucking amazing through my 1966 kalamazoo model two, great with vox AC-4, and its fucking explosive through my randall solid state. it isn't to say that it never works with my GA-5 and when it does..hot goddamn.

i know there's nothing wrong with the pedal, but i'm just wondering if anybody knows why it is finicky with my GA-5. also, my phantom arcade works every time with the GA-5 and so do my other dirt pedals... all my pedals, actually.

thanks!

If the pedal works somtimes with the amp, and always works with other amps - gotta be the amp.

Loose connections? bad solder joint? Does the issue happen with the gibson and other pedals?

Huh, so to clarify, it works 100% of the time with all of your other amps, but less than 100% of the time through the GA-5 it just doesn't make any sound at all? That sounds really weird.

Could it be to do with the input impedance in the amp? Pretty sure that the algal bloom doesn't have an output buffer, so whatever comes after it is going to affect the sound in some way (although this does seem super drastic...). Maybe someone who knows stuff can chip in? Perhaps try putting a pedal after it - either a non-TB pedal (on or off doesn't matter) or a TB pedal (as long as it's on). That way that pedal will be interacting directly with the amp, and your fuzz will be interacting with the following pedal. Bear in mind that I know naff all of nothing about electronics, so this is wild guess territory.
