FWIW, I just played through a tube bass amp for the first time -- got the YBA-1 up and running with a 1x15 -- and it's awesome. I still like my Trace, but this thing has some nice vintage grind to it.

I've come to like tweeters but in moderation. I can't stand ones that are set too high at a show, and it's INSTANTLY recognizable - like nails on a blackboard.

I have to be careful though, I did blow a tweeter in my older SWR cab since my bass(es) have ear-splitting treble.

So the wife went out with my son for a couple hours, so I hooked everything up and blasted away for a while. It looks like it is actually the tweeter that is blown on the Avatar, thank fucking christ. The two 12s put out plenty of low end, but I really do hate the sound without the tweeter on, its just so dark and muddy.

I also ran the whole rig through my Carvin 4x10, and fuck, it sounded good through that cab. It's making me second guess selling it. Anyways, whether I keep or sell the 2x12, I'm gonna have to replace that tweeter either way.

So anyone got a favorite tweeter they want to suggest? Avatar's website says that it uses Foster horn tweeters, which look like they run pretty cheap online. But while I'm at it, I may as well upgrade this bitch to a really nice one, right?

I have no clue how people can play clean with no tweeter. Like chief, said....MUD. Rawr. Inarticulate mud.

But I also don't see how people can play fuzz with a tweeter. SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH.

So I built my L-Pad on the side of my fEARful 15/6/1. As easy to change as clicking on a pedal.

Yeah, not understanding the tweeter love. I get plenty of clarity from a 4x10 with no tweeter, I guess maybe it's different with 12 and 15 inch speakers?

oh I have a tweeter in my main cab.... I just cut the wires that go to it...

Well, I personally have found that when I play with a darker tone, no one can hear me in my band's mix. Back when I used to use a 15 and no tweeter, there was one time where I played a whole verse and chorus in the wrong tuning, and no one could even tell. It just sounded like a vague rumble in no particular key. Getting a clankier tone was the only way to make myself heard during shows. And it worked, because now everyone can hear me and they started giving me actual feedback on my playing after gigs.

So I just ordered the replacement diaphragm for the Fostex. I took the horn apart and the old one looks fine, but I'll just replace it anyway. 18 bucks, whatever.

See this is where flats come in.. they have this big low-mid spike and a more fundamental in the initial attack :thumb: When ever I play with a band with rounds and a bright clean sound I always end up beating the shit out of the bass because to me I am missing all this power and mass to the sound... and I end up getting pissed off and feel I can't get the fucking thing loud enough even when I am supposedly loud enough.. :lol: I'm not saying there are NO highs in my sound but... with out dirt it is pretty much a reggae/60's soul type of thing... :idk: No I don't recommend this sound unless you want that sound but lots of CLEAN highs bum the fuck out of me :grumpy:

saying that I have some kind of dirt on anymore 70%+ of the time :evil:

Also that means on a tube amp... in rehearsal [because for whatever reason EVERY rehearsal spot I have ever been in the room eats lows :mad: :mad: :mad: ] B-8, M-5, T-3, and EQ is a hill boosting lows... because tube amps are as fucking trebly as anything else...

I have a bass cab with a tweeter, thing is I plan on playing guitar through it, once I've got the cash for a Bassman 50 head. So guitar through a tube bass head into bass cab (1x15" + 1x10" + horn tweeter) :idk:

hopefully it doesn't sound like shit.

Yeah, to each his own, but reggae/60s soul is definitely not the tone I want. I don't think that it's necessarily the fundamental that's missing. In my covers band (with a really heavy hitting drummer and guitars distorted 95% of the time) you're not gonna hear the fundamental as a distinct note at all. Bright overtones are pretty much the only thing that punches through.

I think it depends on what you think of as punching through.. but a good example of a old school bass tone punching through distorted guitars and heavy drumming is well Geezer and a lot of doom players that follow.. I don't know.. I have never really had a issue out side of shitty rooms... which I am either to loud or quiet to me even when I am told everything sounds great.. and really I am not sold on if treble would really solve that.. and unless I don't know the song I don't really need to hear every detail to do my job... and half of the time I think things are out of tune even when I am watching a tuner.. :idk: And it's not that I can't appreciate a biting bass sound.. I just don't like it for how I play most of the time.. don't know why.. :idk: and I said and a lot and I have no idea why..

Whereas, I don't really think that most doom bass players punch through at all. That's one of the things I don't like about most doom. The bass just blends in too much with the downtuned guitars, and you just get this mushy wall of sound. :idk: So yeah, to each his own.

And it's not so much whether I can hear myself (we have a cool monitor setup for that), its that I want the crowd to be able to pick up my bass as a distinct instrument, and not just some indistinct thump and rumble.
