I never paid any attention to Against Me! But now I'm kind of interested.

I was reading some comments people posted on this and I was physically upset by some of it.
It sucks realizing how arrogant and prejudice some people are.
Never listened to the band, I wish the best of luck to her, as well.

Also, she's got some pretty sick blackwork on her legs. Jealous.

My bassist will really like this.

New Wave is a pretty cool album if you ask me.

Yeah, totally hinted at it in "The Ocean". I never interpreted it literally though. But, yeah, much love for Gabel and her incredibly brave decision. They really lost me with White Crosses, but everything else AM! has done has been gold IMO. One of my favorite bands since I was like 14.

i'm really glad she's confronting the issue publicly. it's very brave, and hopefully will do a lot to raise awareness.

Pretty much this. I lost interest in the music when Warren left.
But, I have to say, she has a pretty awesome wife.

having this discussion on another forum, and i have to say im glad ILF is as understanding as it is, because there are some major uninformed assholes spouting off about this shit who even have the gaul to think that they're not only right, but compassionate and understanding for their views as well.

Yeah, it seems like people are kind of paying attention. When I was coming out to family and friends last year, Chaz Bono had been on TV a lot recently and I didn't have to explain as much. These kinds of public figures can save the rest of us some effort.

I've been waiting for a badass MtF to make some noise. As the Lana Wachowski story trickled out, I was impressed she was able to do it considering her celebrity but I really wanted her to make a public statement. That Gabel is talking about it before really starting the transition is really interesting.

Never heard of this person, but isn't it weird that there are those who think they have some right to have a say in how other people live their lives? Specifically, some of the snide comments on the Rolling Stone piece. What business is it of anyone else how this guy decides to live or to change about himself, including his gender?
Where does his family live? Wonder if the governmental cavemen will try to annul their marriage once they count as two women ...
Good deals done with all these guys

I guess it's because their posting relatively anonymously on the internet. Talking crap on the net has little consequence, some people just act like prats as a result.

Against Me's music always kinda bored me. Good for for Ms Gabel though, must take a lot of nerve to come out like that when your in such a public position.

Well that depends on a lot of different things. First, what state they live in; many states already have constitutional bans, like California's Proposition 8. Second, how the supreme court rules on these sorts of bans; this probably wont all play until next year, but IMO things like prop 8 don't stand a chance against the equal protection clause. Anti-gay logic is based on anecdotal evidence and traditional definitions, neither of which have much legal standing. Third, it depends on the legal status of transgender persons and whether or not they can, in the eyes of the law, change their gender. Once again, that is going to come down to the state, and I have no idea what kind of precedents exist in that regard.

The way I understand it, marriage is subject to contract law so the contract stands if it was legally made originally. That's one of the great ironies of gay marriage bans - there are already lots of legal same-sex marriages all across the country as people have transitioned.
The only challenge I ever heard of was kind of a different situation. In Texas, the family of a dead guy tried to block his wife's inheritance because she was trans. She had transitioned and legally had her gender changed before the marriage so it was a legal marriage between a man and a woman.
