Billy has a belly.

I thought billy was going to irritate me first but the interviewer bothers me even more.

I'm definitely not much of a Pumpkins fan these days, and I usually find 90% of what Billy says to be hilarious in a "Oh, silly Billy..." kinda way. But this was actually pretty interesting to me. It's not the first time that I heard that kind of advice... this week, even.
well i guess, but i just don't know.

He doesn't realize he was famous at a time when Major labels had a lot of money invested in Alternative Rock and artists could be millionaires. The climate 15 years later is MUCH different.

both Billy and the interviewer were pretty irritating and contradicted themselves repeatedly, and much of BC's historical context was laughably inaccurate--the concept album FAR predated the Beatles and Beach Boys...i'm sure Bill's heard of Songs for Swinging Lovers and Sketches of Spain--but when he stopped listening to himself talk about how wonderful he was he made some surprisingly lucid points. i think the obvious path for artists to take nowadays is to self-promote via a web presence with self- or guerilla-produced videos and other interactive content, and i believe that the artist of the future will have to work in multiple media in order to be appreciated or even taken seriously. the technology is finally here for Fripp's "small mobile intelligent units."

ironically Fripp is more wrapped up in settling legal battles than remaining relevant.

also i'd say we've seen the "small mobile intelligence units" appear in music

yes, but i think that in the future folks are going to have to integrate multimedia and interactive content--and i'm not talking about social media here, i'm talking about stuff people can truly have a creative and personal relationship with--to a degree we are only scratching the surface of today. i'm already far enough behind the cutting edge that anything i speculate about would be both obsolete and embarrassing, but there's obvious stuff that's already been done on an experimental or even a mass-market basis that i expect to become de rigeur for future success e.g. access to online/downloadable remix features and interactive multiplayer game content. if you want to be David Bowie in 2030--that is, if you want to be a Big Media Star AND shock the bourgeoisie--you're going to have to be able to sing, write, perform, AND edit, code, debug, webhost, and moderate.

No real revelations in Billy's banter there.

You want a lucrative career? Knuckle down in school,...go to college and become a lawyer or a doctor.

I actually do find his "no disrespect to the kid's in the basement with protools" dig to be disrespectful. I'm not saying that music isn't getting watered down as a result of easy access to DAWs but badly produced music is listened to by the lowest common denominator (or not listened to at all) and who gives a fuck about the LCD (well math teachers maybe)?

There are plenty of talented artists and bands in the DAW culture who don't give a fuck how many people they reach, don't give a fuck about getting rich and don't give a fuck what some self absorbed has been thinks about them. It's not DAW cultures fault you can't make a buck anymore Billy Corgan.

that was one of the parts of his spiel that made me want to throttle him the way i used to want to throttle Mike Love. i'm sorry, but he's NOT worth more than "some kid in the basement with ProTools"...he's a Muppet who got lucky and cashed in on the grunge boom.
