Re: Toobz vs SS - Bass Amps
Two reasons why I went with my Orange over the Meatsmoke. I have credit with MF...so I am making payments for a year without interest. A meatsmoke is 100 pounds. They must have some Iron in that bitch! For real. I still want a Meatsmoke someday or an Electric Amp...

SO CONFUSED.
I don't get it. If you think you're shit sounds good, then what's left to question? Toobs or transistors, a good sounding amp is a good sounding amp.

^^^^ This.
yaa - tube amp snobs can lead you astray VERRRY far and very fast.
There are pro's and con's to both of them. For me, I prefer a hybrid design. (tube pre, solid-state power)
I've owned all tube, solid-state, and hybrid's......
I guess that's not saying much since I have everything

Re: Toobz vs SS - Bass Amps
I have never played a better all TOOOB head than the Mesa 400+ Just so FUCKING... GOOD.
I'm not a fan of the "classic" ampeg sound. PPffttt.
Keep in mind the weight and cost. To re-tube with 8-12 power and 3 or 4 pre's, you're shelling out a good amount of cash.
I also couldn't keep my 400+ plus because we just beat the fuck out of it, plain and simple. Our shit just got abused from gigging and traveling so much. Loading in, loading out, blah blah, list goes on.
I have my Mesa Carbine M9 with a GK 1001 and love it.
Although, I have MASSIVE BONERZZ for the new Mesa TOOOOB heads coming out.

Hey Excane, how would you compare the sound of the Mesa M9 to the 400+.
I mean, obviously you preferred the 400's sound....but just how much more and what were the differences?

Actually, I like the Carbine over the 400. I just meant that the 400 was better than other all-tube amps I compared it to.
Apples and oranges.
The Carbine is amazing. It does everything, and not jack of all trades - master of none. It really is a master at all.
The custom designed mosfet's in Mesa's power section make it stand out considerably from other brands in the same running.
It allows HUUUGE peaks and lightning fast response but still sounds full, round, and just plain GREAT. The 400 would break up more, like a tube-amp should and had a "thump" that just resonated in your chest. MMMM.
I'm not gonna even go in the area of "it sounds warm....nice and vintageeeyyy"
That stuff is just horseshit. They're both terrific amps.

Re: Toobz vs SS - Bass Amps
I hear ya.
I REALLY like the color or voicing of the Ashly going into the Mesa 400....it's like everyone wants to talk about EQ and stuff when discussing amps but there really is a flavor to it. Not just EQ but a distinct coloring that each brand has. I know that if I get a Mesa Bass 400+ it should have that sound but I was curious to see if the M9 did, as well. Because if it does, it's a no brainer, that's what I should get.

Re: Toobz vs SS - Bass Amps
I would definitely check a geetard center or other mesa dealer and try an M9.
I think you'd love it, but try one out to be sure. It definitely has its own character, but doesn't fudge your tone.

Re: Toobz vs SS - Bass Amps
I advocate for Behndy getting that Traynor on the condition that he doesn't get rid of his current amps in the process. That way he can experiment,...compare and contrast. If he winds up not being sold on the Tube amp,...then just put it back on the market. Could be good trade bait for pudlulz on TB.
I still have my SS gear. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it,...but when I moved to a tube amp,...I was hella enamored with it. I wouldn't call myself a tube snob. I will admit to still being in the honeymoon phase with the SVT. As I keep saying,...I feel like I'm 90% of the way to getting the tone I hear in my head once I get new and proper gauged strings on my bass for the tuning I'm in, get the bass setup and potentially have the flat bell brass frets replaced with fresh rounded profile Nickel Silver frets.
I'm happy to hang onto the SS gear for when I get the SVT in for servicing. I would have much preferred an old 400+ but they seem to move quickly when they pop up on the market. My SVT came up locally and for a steal (much less than I was seeing the 400+ being listed at and the SVT has some minor issues that need resolving); I couldn't NOT jump all over it.

How do you like the Orange? I thought I read somewhere that the bass, mid, and treble are cut only. Is that accurate?
I didn't realize they weighed that much. That's about 25 pounds heavier then one of my 410's.
Still want one though.
Plus, he's in the Seattle area so no shipping. excane wrote: For me, I prefer a hybrid design. (tube pre, solid-state power)

I like the hybrid design too, but again, I haven't spent much time with tube amps either.

Re: Toobz vs SS - Bass Amps
I love that Orange Head. Nah I mean if it is then naturally It has the biggest speaker bursting sound ever. The low end is so strong that I have to only have on about 9 o'clock to get chest pounding lows. The Orange cuts through the mix like no other. I have played and owned several tube heads, this is tits for sure.
