Analog Delay Recommendations?

Looking for different possibilities in a true analog delay. What do you like?

DMM?
Malekko?
Retro-sonic?
Maxon?

Right now I've got an Earthquaker Disaster Transport and a Boss RE-20. Both digital. I've never had an analog delay and I will probably get rid of one or both of my digital delays.

How do you like either of them for an always on delay to create some ambience without overpowering your direct tone?

Is that Malekko the Bright or the Dark?

I have a maxon AD900 that I love the sound of but it doesn't oscillate [but then I have a real space echo for that], but is is clean and big, I love the thing. The Malekko bright is suppose to be voiced like the AD900 so if was to look for a new delay that or the maxon AD-999 Pro is what I would get.

Maxon makes a great analog delay i believe it's the, AD999. MXR Carbon Copies are good, there was a few problems with the second batch that they made. I think the people that were building them were QCing them and the only thing that worked properly was the bypass. Carbon Copies work really well in fx loops if you run it straight in the front they tend do get a little loud. Also the old Ibanez 18 volt analog delay I beleive that's the AD808 if I'm not mistaken and it's fuckin beautiful. And of course, the Deluxe Memory Man is like the holy grail of analog delays for delay freaks like myself.

Yea sure I guess you could do the always on thing with decent results. YMMV.
The e600 is dark.

I'd also keep an eye out for the new analogman ARDX20 delay, it will give the new malekko a run for its money I'm sure.

My suggestion is to buy an Daphon E20DL you can spend £20 to mod it and end up with a DM-2 but better... Swap the B3208 out for a www.smallbearelec.com V3205 and you get 500ms Delay which is a hugeee improvement, then change the JRC4558 chip out for an OPA2134 for increased fidelity, then change a couple of resistors out to fine tune it a 10k trimmer in the R18/19 slot and a 20k trimmer behind all the caps in the centre (theres a trimmer symbol which they've just replaced with a fixed resistor.

Then all you need to do is true bypass it with a DPDT mini switch and you have a true bypass analog delay that works great and has the sturdiest casing of any pedal you will ever find (it's cast iron basically)

+1 for the carbon copy. Cheap, sounds great, has modulation, oscillates like a mofo, small. Can't go wrong.

if you're interested at all in the ad-9 I would definitely look into the mod that Keeley does for it. It's a bit on the expensive side but it does wonders to an already pretty cool pedal. Plus you'll get awesome customer service.

Dude Malekko FTW. You get a tap tempo, built in modulation, AND tone control. Built in the states, by a good guy! If I was looking for those other features at the same price I'd get the Quicksilver.

AM just slaps his name on mass produced (tweaked) pedals, or pedal designs. Why does he have absurd waiting lists for his other pedals if there is an AMAsia? Juss sayin... Malekko FTW!


Edit: Quicksilver is $450!!! WTF! There is always the DE-7 with an fx loop for teh cheapz.

I have a Electro Harmonix DMM (modded by analogman) and I love it. I've played a lot of delays and it's definitely my favorite. It's got a very dark and moody tone to it, plus It's also got chorus/vibrato, which is nice.

If you want small delays, the 616 will slay the carbon copy I'm sure. Same price point w/ more features ftw.

I did say the AM will give the 919 a run for it's money, but the AM is offering a slightly different delay for a different crowd.
The ardx20 allows you to have 2 different delay channels which can be switched on the fly. It has an fx loop and expression inputs for both time and feedback.
It apparently will also be modular (external tap tempo and preset add-ons to be released in the future)

While the malekko has tap tempo out of the box, it lacks expression inputs and an effects loop, a deal killer for some. Personally I'll be picking up both.

AM is one of the "original" boutique guys still around, and deserves the wealth of attention he now experiences.
With all respect to Josh (my e600d sounds like a dream), the E300/600''s were just going after the maxon/boss delays.

Only the delays are produced by analogman Asia, because it was Ohbayashi San at the Japanese AM shop who designed them.
(interesting fact, the original analogman AR20DL was made in collaboration with Daphon)
The new delays will indeed be hand soldered in China, as to eliminate any waiting lists.
I realize this is clever wording, probably much like how EHX is "hand made in NYC" even though they outsource part of the process.

A different side of the coin is what malekko is doing with he 919 being made in the USA by skynet. There is no way to make crazy delays like the 919 or ardx20 on the cheap by hand and in the USA.

The only wait lists that exist are for the bi-compressor and the King of Tone, which are made in small quantities.
AM could export the process but he prefers to keep it in house. It's not like he sees any profit from the insane prices the KOTs go for on TGP or ebay.

As I mentioned, I love both builders and will be getting both...but I'm whore. For the rest of you it boils down to what features you want, and more importantly how YOUR ears like them.

tl;dr? I like delays. I love fuzz.
