bassist in my band uses an ampeg SVT 450H (solid state, 450W) through a 2x12 and he usually needs to crank it almost to full to be heard with us.
he tried out my amp before a show one night - an ampeg V2 (tube, 50W) through a 1x15 and when he was on 4/10 it was already louder and sounded more ballsy than his amp. YMMV though

I've found those SS SVTs to be pretty lacking in volume, for some reason.

I think it might be a quirk of the solid state ampegs. My Hartke (120W solid state through an 8 ohm 4x10 cab) was more then capable of keeping up with a JCM800 and a really loud drummer without help from the PA.

I guess the speakers might have a lot to do with it in that case though. I think unless you have 15" or larger, 2 speakers isn't enough.

Yeah I think it's more the ampegs than solid state amps in general. Played through a solid state ~200W peavey and it was monstrously loud. Speakers are important too as GotD said though. Maybe the 2x12 isn't the loudest cab? :idk:

My 100W Bugera is all tube and is a good deal louder than my 300 watt Genz Benz and my 400 watt Peavey before it. :idk:

No. Not too loud at all. Do it.

Those Traynors are 200W? But, it's not too loud. And, if you don't like it, use it as a slave amp for the Rusty Box, so you have some sweet sweet power tube break-up. It's what Shellac does on tour (RB into the effects return of backlined SVTs).

The only tube amp I've ever played through was the same one Big Chief has. I liked it but wasn't overwhelmed with desire. But... I didn't really mess with the knobs very much though and still kinda want a tube amp. It generally takes me a while to get used to something and that one practice wasn't really enough time. For me...

$400 seems like a good deal on that Traynor from what I've seen.

Hrrrmmmmmm....My Mesa 400 has 16 tubes in it and.....it's just not loud enough for me. I love that Mesa sound, though. Especially the way this rig sounds when it's paired with my Ashly preamp. Motherfucking hate Ampeg sounds. Muddy POSs. But yeah, my Mesa sends 200W to each fEARful 15/6 I have and it just got BURIED, today. I don't really dig other tube brands....thinking I might just go back to SS. Each of those fEARful cabs can handle 750W.....it's like I'm starving them.

Ampeg = Muddy?

Not in my experience.

I do love the Mesa Sound though.

Ampeg's just aren't articulate enough for me. No definition. It's like my bass says "fud....fud fud fud".....

To be fair, I'm not sure how much I would have preferred the Mesa sound if it were JUST the Mesa. The Ashly preamp might have had a lot to do with that sound.

I might go Glockenklang this time.
