I dug the feel of the coated strings....I just need like my shit lively and clanky. I noticed the coated strings would keep their almost new string lively sound FOREVER....but would never start off with that fresh clankety clank I need.

I have some motherfucking sweaty hands. I go through strings quick. So I wanted to love the coated. Never could, though. DR Bootzillas and Thomastik Infeld are my jams. I think I might try the Circle Ks just to see what's up but something tells me they're more for the people who like a duller sound.

And fuck FLAT wounds.

Coated strings are cool, I put DR Black Beauties on both of my basses about a year ago or so. You're right that they're not quite as clanky as a new set of uncoated rounds, like the DR Hi Beams I usually used. Also, I'm a pick player, and I found that the coating started wearing off quicker than I liked.

As for Circle Ks, that's what I have on both basses right now. They're definitely darker than Hi Beams, but the slightly darker sound is starting to grow on me. The thing I like most about them is the balanced sets; compared to other sets, I like the higher tension on the low strings, and the lower tension on the high strings. I find that the amount of effort needed to fret each string is more even now.

I've had Ken Smith Rock Masters steadily on my 004 pretty much since I first got it...to me, they have the Rotosound growl going on but last about 5 times longer. And I just put a new set of GHS pressurewounds on my Stiletto...never used them before, and people say that they can sound like a darker Roto set. We'll see...

I use rotosounds or blue steels usually. I put a set of DR DDTs on my bass that I now keep entirely in d standard aaaaaaaaaand really there's nothing outstanding about them. They are kinda low tension though, which I dig. I've always been super underwhelmed by DRs.

Circle Ks are GLORIOUS. Balanced .150 set is great for BEAD!

I use Ernie Ball string, really dig the new ones. I also dig DR fat beams. Fuck flats. Fucking things sound like a dead turd. Turd! I have tried many strings over the years and these two are the kind I like.

See, I love floppy stainless steels. DRs are just never bright enough.

since i play fretless i play flatwounds because otherwise i'd wear great bloody trenches in the fingerboard, and because i like a high percentage of BOOM in my sound. on both guitar and bass i seem to be inherently trebly compared to other humans, perhaps due either to my small hands and tiny fingertips or my intense, nervous disposition, and have to roll off high end to be bearable..the tone knob on the JB is usually parked somewhere below 50%. for now i've settled on Rotosounds, which have enough brightness to balance and growl but not too much; i believe the low string is a .105.

JWAR can you really tell the difference with the new ones, Cobalts, how they react with the pickup and all of that?

It's cool hearing everyon'e take on which strings and why.

Yeah, Roto flats are where it's at if you want the perfect middleground.

Cool to hear. I was about to order a set of 5ers and was debating which gauge to go with.

that reeally seems to be the case for me...with the Jazz Bass, if i bring the bridge PU in and roll the tone up i can get near the Rickenbacker/prog sound, especially with a pick, and with mostly neck PU and the tone rolled off it's late 50s jazz trio all day.

The Cobalts sound thicker to my ears. They were on the 25th when I sent it. Of choose I digg a certain sound. Everyone is different.
