OMG, that TB thread is like a trainwreck (and not for the reasons you're thinking).

(Sorry, dedicated bassists, but no matter what anyone says, from its inception Bass Player's never been a good magazine.)

Guitar Player used to be really good a long time ago. I think Premier Guitar is actually pretty good. I've never found a bass magazine that's been any good.

I agree. Actually I blame a LOT of the closed minded ideas about bass playing and gear on BP, one thing I NEVR liked about TB was how BP influence on the culture was/is so dominant.

in the 70s and early 80s GP was great. once they split the subject matter into Bass Player and Frets it fucked things up. it's kind of like modern professional sports...once you over-expand, you dilute the talent base. and in bassist mag terms, you wind up doing features about the dude from the Genitorturers.

You mean Evil D, who also was/is in Morbid Angel, he is actually a good bass player...BOOM DubKittyWitty.

Anyways, speaking of dumb bass stuff, anybody tried those DR Neon strings yet?
I just put a set on my bass and after a few minutes they feel great. At first the coating feels strange...

I'll take your word for that.. I started playing in 92...

I also think they play/play way too much attention to the chops manglers/BIT people. I read so many close minded things when I read that rag [hey I lived in the middle of nowhere in my teens] that it took me a while to come to the realization that what I want and like is just as good as what they do in it's own way.

I have them on my RW strung bass, I like them, the sound the feel, the look[ORANGE]! I am also trying a set on a guitar and they feel funny... sound good plugged in though... and are green which go well with the guitar being that it is made out of florescent green plastic.. :thumb:

One of the reasons why I used to like Guitar Player was because it was relatively diverse.

Bass Player was never diverse, it failed for me from the very beginning.

i'm not saying the guy from the GTs isn't good...i have no idea. my point is that if you have to fill three mags rather than one you're going to have to go pretty far afield and you're going to wind up either with a dearth of material or a mag so scattershot that people can't relate. Frets had the dearth-of-material problem...it never seemed like a whole magazine, and every issue seemed to pivot on an interview with some bluegrass musician. BP never seemed to know what it wanted to be.

Yeah, Frets was pretty crappy too. They were all niche mags. Not at all what I look for in a music mag.

I think Miller-Freeman thought they could make more money by dividing everything into separate mags. They were wrong.

Is the coating anything like Elixer's Nano-Web coating? I somehow ended up beta'ing those last year, and...yuk.

No clue, these are the first set of coated strings that I have ever used. It is weird. I have never though too much about strings. Usually it is what was at whichever store I went to, Medium gauge, usually Ernie Balls (I like those) , then I bought a ton of cheaper strings at once and they lasted a long time. They sounded okay for awhile, I changed strings pretty often with them though.
What strings does everybody on here use, and why?
