Tone Reapers, Scarabs, and others???

Post by benjuro »

Love love LOVE my Tone Reaper (like all things EQD) and am thinking about getting into another Tone Bendererr...how's the Basic Audio Scarab compare?
I know there's a f*ck ton of tone bender types out there, any others for similar $$$ that need to be seriously considered?

All of the Ghost Effects tonebender fuzzes are nuts, but not really in the same price league.

Basic Audio Gnarly - it's Tonebendery and great. Versatile too.

2nd on Ghost Effects. Ian twittered that he will make "Sounds of Today" and "Doom Benders" soon.
Yes, it is a bit higher than eqd but IMHO still a steal for the build quality.

I have the tone reaper myself and it is a great pedal. Not sure what really is similar in the same pricerange. I always like the dirt transmitter as a counterpart for it - no idea if you are into that one.

Excellent, thanks!
Build quality looks impressive on those Ghost Effects for sure, very intrigued by the Harbinger but ANYTHING called the Doom Bender sounds right up my alley!!! Money doesn't seem out of line for PTP...

Univalve, I do have a Dirt Transmitter, you stacking those two...? Which comes first?

Besides Ghost stuff, which I can't praise enough...
The fulltone soulbender is in that range (not much more expensive, I think they go for $170 new and much less used). A sometime favorite of Dan Auerbach (supposedly the thickfreakness fuzz).
There are some that call me...morningstaru?

Tone reaper first for me. I have the bias low and a broken speaker sound with the dirt transmitter and like the extra tone reaper cranking. Tone reaper is my favorite eqd pedal.

Doom Bender is a Bit Smoother than Sounds of today.

In my setup I prefer the Sounds Of Today to the Tone Reaper in my Hoof Reaper. The SoT sounds and feels much more organic and alive than the TR (the TR sounds a little bit more compressed to me.) The SoT also does this really nice low gain thin, sputtery stuff which I really really enjoy.

Goddamn, seriously? Sounding like I need to have a conversation with Ghost Effects to help decide which one's next...

That is right, tone reaper gets not into the sputtery area. But each MKI differs in this ability.
SOT will be also my next ghost.

the Reaper isn't supposed to be a MK I Bender, it's supposed to be a MK III, isn't it?

I think that's right, with Jamie's efforts going towards being able to get any era bender tones out of it...not experienced enough with different versions to know how successfully TR does this.
I'm not so into the thin and spitty side of it as I am the thick crushing side...

MKI sputtery is not thin in my experience.

Good to know. Again, not nearly as much experience with these as I'd like...
