Twin will bring stupid low end, if you need more, extension cab (1x15 would do it in spades).

tone dentists swear by blackfaces, which are rarer, way more expensive, and have a different circuit. silverfaces are just fine. IIRC they're more wattage than blackface Twins (100 vs. 85) and will blow you into the sea, even if you live in South Dakota. i see them for ~$700-750 on Craigslist and in used-instrument shops here in the Bay Area with the standard Oxford or Utah speakers which usually but not always were branded Fender and are totally adequate for decimating chicken coop populations.

Agree 100% with the kitty, although even a BF Twin (old or reissue) will still blow you from South Dakota to the coast. If you need to play the rooftop in NYC, there's your amp.

I prefer the BF cosmetics, but the SF clean for years. It's a conundrum, I know. On the Twins, they're clean for years anyway, if you can hear overdrive from one naturally it's probably because you're breaking down the drywall in the room you're in.

you won't be disappointed with a silverface. PLENTY fucking loud. and keep in mind they're not popular with neighbors.

i have a silverface Twin in need of restoration...i played it for years and never turned it up past 6 except for my yearly 4th of July observance, when i turned everything to 10 and played the National Anthem.

The original speakers in my twin blew. It didn't handle low end very well, and my amp tech ended up replacing it with Eminence speakers (I can't remember which ones exactly, the amp is 5 hours away from me at the moment). It completely changed the sound of the amp in a good way (for me at least), and I use it with an oversized traynor 4x12 cab which is literally as tall as me. It sounds unreal.

The amp I've had is closed-back, so I was wondering how the open-backed ones would do as far as the low end. I'm not very techy myself, but for some reason I was under the impression that closed-back helped the bass/low end? Am I being a retard about that?

Closed back will help low end generally, but for guitar purposes, I've heard open back cabs/combos that have an obscene, screaming amount of low end on tap. If I use extension cabs, though, they've always been closed backs as I like to have a seat a hair behind where they are on stage to dodge some of the directional scream that closed back gives more than open.

The Silverfaces are generally believed to be mid-scoopy. Blackfaces are stupid expensive.

I had a friend that had a silverface twin, got it for $500. He played a hollow 12 string into it, and he was kinda a dumbass when it came to gear (never figured out how things sounded good or worked, just kinda set it on one thing, and never changed it), so he ran all the knobs on ten, and the master at two. I recall that thing being nasal searingly loud. I always wanted to steal it from him.

PA-100s also are apparently rather similar, and cheaper, and heads.
