Rack mount question

Post by VauxhallandNick »

Hey everyone, I've got a 1986 Jc 120, looking into buying a Yamaha Fx500 and was curious if anyone knew how/if it was possible to run that sort of equipment through a combo amp, however, this version has no effects loop in the back.

Thanks a million.

I run mine in front and it sounds just dandy. I can read minds, so since you're using it as a digital delay/chorus, just think of it as pedal that does that without a footswitch.

You can borrow mine if you want to try before you buy though.

Ha ha I want it for the soft focus, apparently it's what Slowdive used? Do you know what that patch has on it effect wise?

  Yep! That's what I got it for too. I'd have to dig out the manual to get the specifics, but it's a compressor so as to take out the attack and increase sustain>an awesome chorus (I think they call it "ensemble" or something)>delay and reverb. You don't even really have to mess with the preset, it's that good.

The chorus setting right after soft focus is also uhmazing.

If you found one cheap (I think mine was like $50), I'd say grab it.

Yea, when in doubt, just plug it in the front, just be aware of it like a pedal (amp distortion after the unit may have unintended, possibly fun, results) .

I wouldn't have known what an effects loop was for years gigging with a Space Echo and a couple Digitech RDS evil delays slamming the front of a Bassman.

when these units were new to the market, i don't think there was any such thing as an amp effects loop.

i'm going to have to try combining patches on the SPX90/GEP50 to get this Soft Focus thing. i think one of them at least has an Ensemble chorus setting.

Certainly rare and often solid state only - I think my Sunn Solos II and early Roland JC120 had 'line out' and 'power amp in' which functioned as a defacto loop but usually sounded like shit.
