There's no boutique hipster alternative cred for using one, but there's nothing wrong with them whatsoever. I've owned vintage Fenders, and love a good Fender clean - and frankly, the Hot Rod amps (with the exception of the damn boxy shitbucket that is the Junior with non-standard Fender tubes, killing the sound) soundwise lose nothing to most of their vintage equivalents.

I would not feel unarmed with a HR Deluxe or Deville 2x12 (don't really like 10s for guitar speakers), Twin Reverb, vintage Bassman or Bandmaster head, etc. in good working order - I can get my sound from any of them.

The Hot Rod amps are like Boss pedals - no love in boutique circles but there's fundamentally nothing wrong with most of them.

I really don't get what people think is wrong with the custom classic Voxs. I have one and if you ask me it sounds about as good as anything :idk: The reverb is kinda lame, but aside from that it fucking rules and it's definitely loud enough for a band.

I tried the newer version and didn't think the cleans sounded as good. Maybe it's just me..

The only thing I didn't like on them were the blues that didn't have the mueller h1777 cones. The new ones need a tube change right out the gate. Wish you lived closer Dub, I'd let you play through my HW.

i don't have one, but i've heard nothing but good things about the Epiphone Blues Custom 30. it's a 2x12 tube beast with wattage switchable from 30 to 15. in fact, someone on ILF told me to check one out when i was amp shopping. it's a very underrated amp IMO

i wasn't nutty about the Blues Custom i tried, but i have a friend who owns one and loves it to pieces. in fairness, i didn't spend more than ten minutes with the amp, which was perfectly fine; i just liked the Laney i wound up with better. the BC is fairly Fender-ish to my ears--i think it's a 6L6 amp--so if that's your style you should certainly check it out. at the time i was trying to get away from the Fender amp sound.

i don't know what things are like in WI, but out here you can get silverface Twin Reverbs and JC-120s for $700 or less all day long.

rfurtkamp, I just played a bandmaster head, he even let me run it with a Swollen Pickle. It was excellent and only $538 I could use that with my 2x12 after maybe changing the stock Tubeworks speakers. I know fuck all about speakers, how do Tubeworks match up to EHX?

45w is perfect volume and head room; I don't need a drive channel; A head and 2x12 might be the easiest to haul.

Oh, and I have an AC15 so I can run all sorts of stereo nonsense

I'm guessing VM stands for "Vintage modified" or some other reissue b.s., and no I don't think so. It was a silverface.

Looked just like this:

I'm thinking I'll pair that up with this:

Yea, if the head works for you, go for it, hard to go wrong with Fender clean for base for anything.

Prices seem about in line with what they're going for these days, as much as it makes me cringe (I still think Bassman heads are everywhere for $200 until I realize it's not 1990 any more).

Price incl. Shipping?

Although I'd prefer to do this sort of thing in person so I can do some trades.

Yeah, it sounded great. Awesome headroom/cleans. Switchable trem (I love amp tremolo) and I really like the difference between the bright and normal channel as compared to clean and unusable drive channel. I'd love to here it out of a 15" speaker and the 10" on top would totally rule. I just need to make this stuff mine now before somebody else swoops it up.

I'd kind of like an effects loop to mess around with, but that's not crucial for me. We, we so excited.

Yea, get a 15" if you can, my go-to cab with a Bassman or Bandmaster was a 1x15 with a JBL. Louder than sln, I measured venue volume by sticking my hand down in front of the cone, my position was to the right and slightly behind the amp cab.

It's the only reason I have hearing left. ;0

Ok, so I bought this guy (1x15/1x10 w/ horn):

Uh so what does the horn really do? I just thought it looked cool.

and played a silverface Bassman 50 head at a shop in madison today. The guy wants $500 for it (he has two). Once I get the money I'm totally getting that. Then I can even get a cheap short-scale bass to rock out for certain songs. That would be so perfect for my post-punk band.

sadly, I will have to trade my carvin head for a screaming Bird and some much needed cash tomorrow.
