Tell me about Sunn amps

Post by aussy »

From the few things that I've read, they're VERY clean
Would they generally be brighter or darker than, say, my blackface bassman
Also they seem to run pretty cheap on ebay... HMMMM

Ok, so they're both VERY clean and VERY loud
The guys who usually like them seem to play sludge/stoner/drone/any thing heavy with copious amounts of distortion and fuzz from pedals
I'm guessing they're voiced relatively dark too, since they have a ton of bass output and the music they're now associated with is typically, well...dark
The research continues...

I can't say mine sounds particularly dark, but I do play it through the normal jack instead of the bright jack.

Yeah I was browsing old threads, and the comment about that made me
Wish I sprung for one then.

Theyre loud and overpriced nowadays as said before

Probably brighter than yer bassman honastly, most of the bassy tone associated with sunn comes from lots and lots of clean headroom therefore lots of clean bass to be had and coaxed out with fat sounding fuzzboxs

clean, loud, hifi-esque (because they copied the output stages from Dynaco stereos), true point to point wiring on terminal strips. Usually easier to tech, fairly simple designs.

Price gouged, try to find a local cheaper unit on CL

My Sunn concert is all of the good things described here. I paid $200 for it on the bay, gigged with it for a year (on bass), dropped it, shit came loose. I paid a dude about $100 to completely fix everything and its amazing. I use it at band rehearsal at a volume of 1, I have lots of room to move. It LOVES my fuzzhuggers for bass and guitar. If this one ever goes south again I will continue fixing it or find another.

Wait, your Sunns sound clean?

*realizes all the knobs on my Sunn are permanently cranked*

Oh, yeah. Nevermind. Carry on.
