Amp quest!

Post by snipelfritz »

I've been thinking about getting a new head lately. The Carvin really just doesn't suit me. I like the way it takes pedals, but the clean sound is...lacking in "sparkle"...so I'm thinking about trading it. There's a Vox AC50 Classic Player's Head at music go round for $550 which might be right in my price range once tax returns come around.

I have a vox ac15 and lurve it, but need something a bit louder for gigging. Any opinion on the AC50CP? Is there a reason I never hear about these? I'd be playing it through a 4x12 with EHX speakers for what it's worth.

AC50's sound pretty different from the 15/30 imo. The cleans just weren't right.

The AC30 is plenty loud...maybe the loudest 30w amp you'll ever play.
if that's not enough you're doing it wrong or you're a big time stadium rock star who needs a PA :p
Though look at the newer C2/c2x/handwired, the cc2 is mreh.
There are some that call me...morningstaru?

Mmmmkay, well I actually went into the store today and played a Fender Blues Deville 2x12. It sounded pretty nice, classic fender cleans. I didn't get a chance to really crank it or try it with some pedals. Does anybody have any practical experience with these?

the deville is a decent amp, and i was actually looking at one, before a ton of people on ILF said to basically attempt to avoid the hot rod/deville series of amps. i've always thought of them as a beginner tube amp, that you'll eventually wanna upgrade. plus, for the price you can easily find a used Bassman that will blow it away on every level. which leads me to my next point...GET A BASSMAN.

I run my twin with a extra ext 12in speaker and its plenty loud and clean. Loud enough I bass for a song through it just fine.

There's really nothing wrong with the Hot Rod amps (except for the Blues Jr. which is a boxy, pathetic, not Fender-sounding piece of shit) - the Deluxe and Devilles sound like a Fender, walk like a Fender, and play like one. There's just nothing glamorous about them. I've owned and gigged extensively with vintage Bassmans, Twins, Sunns, and others, and wouldn't feel unarmed with a Hot Rod Deluxe or Deville.

I've used a Deluxe for years now alongside a Jazz Chorus without incident or complaint.

Amp quest continues...

Why didn't anybody tell me the Fender Super Sonic 22 is like the perfect amp? Any reasons I shouldn't track down a used one of these?

somebody should tell Tone Spud to quit dicking around with the volume knob crap and let us hear what the amp sounds like with the guitar driving it in the clean channel :whateva:

Because for roughly the same price you could get a Twin Reverb. :idk:

A friend of mine uses the Hot Rod Deville 410 and it sounds pretty Boss.
For bigger gigs he'll use a 412 as an extension cab. Since he's the only guitarist in the band,
he puts it on the other side of the stage for a stereo effect.

With a setup like that there aren't many venues where volume would be a problem. :success:

Here is a link to the band:http://ghosthorse.bandcamp.com/album/2010-demo
He used a Les Paul through the Deville (No effects :erm: ) on all the tracks.

i think what i meant to say is that i got the vibe that the deville/deluxe series of fender amps is kind of like a beginner tube amp. still better than a solid state, decent fender cleans, but overall nothing incredibly special going on

Trufax, they used the wrong cone on the speakers (at least in the alnico blues) on the cc2X. I haven't tried the supersonic 22 so I can't vouch at all for its awesomeness.

Hmm 85w is a lot. Part of my amp quest is lower wattage. I can always run the supersonic with an extension. I really like having a footswitch for verb and effects loop. The "modern" drive channel interests me. Fender drive has seemed pretty useless to me so far.
