I lied a little, I'd also like a lightweight Tele w/ a Charlie Christian pickup in the neck position.

I own a few basses, got rid of a lot over the years.

The ones I’ve kept are the ones that I don’t want to put down when I play them.

I have a friend who had a custom P built, exactly matching an original ’57 fat chunky neck, in candy apple red, the whole works.
I don’t like red guitars, I hate the necks on the old Precisions, but every time I’ve played it I don’t want to give it back.

oof. see? THAT'S another reason i think i'm so happy with the one bass. i'm not really good enough to get all the differences in different style basses.

Just ignore snob appeal and what every one else plays.

If it feels right, sounds like the sound in your head, is fun to play and makes you happy then it’s the right instrument.

'course. again, not trashing it at ALL, i just don't get having more than one or two basses or guitars or whatever. i'm simple. i like what i have, i'd want a second as a backup or to have one that looked a bit different.

but that's me. i'm a goof about basses and amps. dunno shits about them.

i will always love my frankenstrat, but mostly for sentimental reasons as it was a gift from a friend on death's door years ago. it could play better, the old japanese floyd rose type bridge is keeping it from sustaining longer, the tuners suck...but it looks amazing and sounds lovely. very heavy for a strat, inherently bassy. love the lace sensors for the heavies, but the cleans are comparatively boring. anyone know of any good single sized humbuckers that are good at both?

would love an sg or a 335 with p90s.

exactly. that's why it's likely that some of my electric guitars will cycle out sooner or later unless i find that i use them more for recording or performing than i do right now...i've had some of them for four or five years and just don't play them because the other ones are more wonderful, or more me. i just sold my dobro because i found that i never played it; if i don't play my Telecaster, it'll meet a similar fate despite the fact that it's a lovely guitar.

I basically agree with you here. I have 2 basses that sound insanely different (because one is dual active buckers, the other is passive PJ fender setup). The only reason I would ever want a third one is because it sounds insanely different from the two I already have (which is the Ric, which sounds like a Ric and is the most obviously signature bass tone ever). All of the minutiae of differences people pick out between different p basses or between different boutique active HH setups ... meh. This is strictly talking about bass here, though, def not qualified to speak on guit stick.

In my early guitar days, when I wasn't hooked on effects, occasionally I'd get bored. Like being with the same woman day in day out, after a month you want something fresh and start paying more and more attention to sexy ones walking by. Eventually you can't take it anymore and get yourself something new. That happened twice. My last guitar purchase was a baritone which was necessary for the Doomed project I was in. It's also the only guitar I still play on rare occasion now that my love has been stolen by bass. Playing bass has made me really dislike the regular scale guitars, I don't get that annoyance with the baritone.

As for the bass, I had the Epi T-Bird for over a year before getting my second bass (Fender MP Jazz). Not so much bored with the Epi as I'm not happy with how it plays on the E and A string past the 10th fret. The MP Jazz is much more comfortable there so it's a nice compliment. The T-Bird is still my main player. I'll likely get a bass that has no flaws to me (custom built if need be) down the road and be done with it. I'd just rather spend the money on hookers and blows than new basses all the time.

the reason i have close to 100 guitars is simply that it's what i do for a living. they make me money and i have an intense passion for music and my job.
just like an artist could draw a picture with a pencil or use crayons...i like crayons. i like different tones. it doesn't make the pencil guy a better artist, nor does it make me a better artist...it's just a different means to an end. i am inspired by odd guitars, same with effects and amps. they all do diff things.
of coarse i could get by with just a couple but it's boring 'for me' to use the same colors all the time. after playing guitar and making music for over 30 years, the different colors seems to stack up and i like the options.
it's no different than having more than one fuzz. for that matter, no different in the amp world. they all do something different.
not to mention i have a shit ton of tunings that i like to play in, some with bass strings, nashville tunings and all that shite. i'd look like an amateur doing a show a making people wait while i tune my guitar back and forth.
then there's the investment factor. that 56 LP Jr i picked for 300 bux is now worth around 5000....that's a nice plus to it.

so while i don't think anyone needs this many guitars, as it is mos def excessive, i don't feel the least bit guilty. i'm not better or worse than the guy coming before or after me. i just do my thing and not worry about what others are doing.
and NO i'm not offended in the slightest about someone not understanding why i do the things i do. personally i do not understand playing video games and watching football but it seems to be popular. thankfully we are are doing different things in this world.

eLwoodian - for sure. i have friends and have met cats that have just an impressive amount of guitars or basses. 'specially people that do well and just get stuff sent to them all the time.

i feel like you but do, but with effects. different pedals make me think of different things. i've just never felt that with different basses, but i'm almost a luddite with them. i was comfy with everything i had, when i could afford a nice one i got lucky and got something that makes me super happy on the first try.

TOTALLLLLY not saying people are weird or wrong for having loads of axes. just a different route than i've gone so it interests me.

i agree with you, Elwood. but i don't think one excludes the other. the reason i have as many guitars as i do (full disclosure: 12) is that different guitars make me play differently. but there are certain ones that i love inordinately and play all the time, and others that sit in their cases unless i need e.g. the Tele voice.

i've also been realizing lately that some of those guitars sit in their cases because they really aren't the right voices for me. i'm trying to decide whether to modify some of them or move them out before i kill any remaining resale value.
