Re: SX Squid RN
My SX bass is pretty sweet IMO. The hardware and pickups are fine, the frets are all good, no sharp edges, etc. The wiring looks a little sketch and I had to re-solder a connection once. It's by no means perfect, but c'mon, it's a $100 bass. I would imagine that SX guitars are of similar "not amazing but definitely playable" quality. I've heard that the owner is pretty receptive to returns/exchanges if you happen to receive a really sub-par specimen. I can't stand their newer headstocks, though, so I've never been able to bring myself to buy one of their guitars.

Kinda looks like what it would look like if you left a Jazzmaster sitting on the dash of your car on a hot summer day. Oh the fate of a melted chocolate bar.... still tasty, just a bit misshaped.

Re: SX Squid RN
SX are ok if you know what to expect. My SX Furrian (Tele knockoff) wasn't even close to perfect, but it was playable out of the box. For the price, that's pretty much what I expected.
In terms of quality, it had a bum pickup, minor paint blems. Tuners were junk. Body/finish seems soft. On the plus side, the frets were better than expected, as was the nut.
The neck is too chunky and flat for my liking.
One problem that might come up is with the interchangeability of parts. I have read more than one account of people who tried to upgrade parts, but found that standard stuff didn't really fit. Non-standard neck pocket shape, bridge mounting pattern, etc.
Here's my way-too-long review.
BTW, check out the Agile Guitar Forum for several subforums on SX guitars.

It's like an Explorermaster! I like it. Something tells me the hands-on experience might be less sexy, though probably fun for a bit.

If you're comfortable with fixing blemishes and correcting things, SX's can be a solid value.
If you're like things to work out of the box, I'd stay away.

Re: SX Squid RN
well, for $119 how good can you really expect it to be? if everything works you're going to be ahead.

Re: SX Squid RN
I've never heard of any problems that can't be fixed with an SX.
Just that they need a good setup, and that you should be ready to swap things out to taste.

Or do what I did, and just keep sending it back till they get it right. I never had to pay for the return shipping garbage, either. I have to say some ridiculous things came my way. Once I received the tele one with no upper strap button, not even drilled for or anything. And, then I ordered a left hand J bass and got a right hand one. Sent it back, and now have left hand one. I like it. I'm not that much of a picky player, so paying more than $300 on an instrument doesn't make sense to me. Most instruments feel the same to me other than the shapes of necks.
But, yeah, the Jbass I now have is great.

It's a Fender Swinger copy. I think those look awesome.

Re: SX Squid RN
I got a fretless SX bass about 2 years ago. The setup on it was alright when I got it, but the strings it came with looked like they were salvaged from a ship wreck. After some new strings it played pretty good. I've pretty much heard the same thing from everyone I've ever talked to that owned one, "They're not great, but they're good for being so fucking cheap."

Re: SX Squid RN
I've actually heard that the Squid makes a pretty racket with the stock pups. I'm getting an SX Lap steel soon. But while I have no prior experience with the SX line, I did own a p90-equipped Agile that sounded quite good. Good wood/hardware on that one. Stock pups were pretty sweet sounding.
