just have your singer pretend to be playing the patches...
you could probably even use an ipod shuffle for that.

lol. no no no NO. see, that's the bullshit i got stuck with with my LAST band. ok idea the way we were s'posed to do it, turned into Karaoke bullshit. never again homie. never. again.

trying to avoid all that by just giving my singer a good verbose hardware keyboard/synth option.

lol. yeah, i know the Receptor, but again, i'm trying to stay at a $1,000 at most, not $2,000 - $3,000 for just one piece. thanks though!

hey Curt!

i've spent all last night and this morning reading up on different samplers...... and i think i'm just gonna try to do a stable ass laptop. i already have a decent interface for it and i'm super comfy with the Kontakt interface. i don't like how the menu systems look in all the ones i've found.

i'm gonna have a talk with mah singer and if she's cool with that (kinda how we're running at rehearsal right now anyways) i think i'm just gonna start picking up pieces. if she wants a more traditional route, we'll hit up a flagship GC and play with a bunch of synths. then i'll try to find a used 'un.

thanks for all the info cha'all! i didna even know about the Fantom stuff. thanks!

yah. i think i decided on a laptop. i just ordered a second Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6, i love that interface. rock solid, usb bus powered goodness. i've shuffled one from home to practice for the last few months and never had one issue with it. this way i can bring my home one to shows as a backup.

gonna laptop shop over the weekend to find something with more specs than i need then strip out all the free crud that comes with it, disable the wifi and turn it into a lean audio machine. we got away with using a generation or two ago macbook with a huge amount of samples and Kontakt running for at least two years, and that was the singer in my last bands laptop that he ran WAY too much crap on. pretty sure i can get an even more stable dedicated lapper now.

weird. i was really excited about having a hardware sampler, but i'm pretty disappointed in the cost vs specs available. i get why, life cycles of computers run way faster than niche hardware music gear. just surprised.

thanks again for all the help y'all!

Laptop is good - no need to spend time translating/mapping your patches :thumb:

lol. yeah. i'm REALLY excited about having the same sample library on a performance machine as what i have at home to write with. i suck at playing keys, but i love sound design and wasn't looking forward to trying to recreate stuff i like at home on a different set of hardware.

just spent some time looking through laptop options and have found a bunch in the $400 range that are a bit higher spec'd than what i use at home and have no problems with. already have a decent midi controller at practice (Korg Kontrol49), so can hold off on buying a longer midi controller for a bit and pick up the laptop in a few days. WOOT.

lol. they DO look interesting, but i can't find anybody that sells them, what price the go at, and the few reviews i found said they were close but included vst's sucked and only half of what they tried to load onto it didna run.

but yah, that kind of thing in the $400ish range would be awesome.

soooooooooo....... anybody here that uses Kontakt used the Kontakt Player? seems like a nice way to have the Kontakt i paid for on two separate machines without buying a new version. looks like there is less editing options in the Player, so might eventually buy a second copy for the performance machine.
