envelope expression pedal

Post by Teej212 »

are there any pedals (similar to the idea of the copilot broadcast) that produces an envelope instead of an lfo that you can use to modulate expression inputs? Im thinking of making one but it could be difficult to get it to do exactly what I want.

do you have any suggested features on one if you were to look for one?

do you mean an envelope that follows the envelope of the audio input?

you can just rectify the signal with a diode then put a low low pass filter after it. you will get something that follows the input. or you can add some additional stuff to flip it, adjust the range, compress etc with simple opamp circuits.

If I ever get off my ass and start getting serious about building That was my second idea for a pedal. a Autowah like envelope follower that controls Vactrol for Exp pedals. which vac would depend on the circuit it would be controlling. Glad to see there are some people who think along the same lines. :joy:

not a filter, just the follower section. so it would put out a voltage and I would use that to control cv or convert it to resistance using a vactrol so it could be used in expression pedal inputs on all pedals

I wanted this to be done for a while now. Sadly, hasn't happened. :( Even more sad is how it's such a simple concept.

I imagine it would be awesome controlling the delays feedback.

well i guess it depends what you mean by the envelope then. if you dont filter the signal it to extract the envelope, you might as well just plug the output of a buffered signal with some dc offset into the cv in on whatever your using as is. However if you are using a vactrol, the photocell wont change in resistance anywhere near as fast as the LED can change brightness so it acts as a low pass filter by default.

i used one to control the speed of a tape deck. you can also make a pretty dirty frequency -> voltage converter on the same principle that works not bad. ie have the speed of the tape player speed up when you play higher notes and slow down when you play lower notes.

The possibilities are endless. Envelope Ringmod comes to mind...

My first pedal is a PWM style fuzz in the same vein as the Synthmonger but with a glitchy lfo and gains structure so it's kinda between that synthmonger pedal, a tremolo pedal and the unpleasant surprise. I just need to get a decent PCB design and start up capital. then prototypes and then awesomes :)
