Metropolous makes some pretty badass Marshall clones, he used to sell kits as well but he stopped doing those a couple years ago.

Those are incredibly pricey though, the cheapest starts at $2750 + shipping. Also I think he still sells all the parts you need at http://metroamp.com/store/ if you want to build your own.

JCM 800's cranked up, everything on 10!! ohh and you got the TOANZ, not tone, but the TOAAAnZ. But really, Johnny Ramone! Ok, I love the Ramones but, I believe you can achieve the sexy tones of Marshall for half the cost, like with a Laney cranked up. But that is just my three cents. Take it or leave it, just keep rocking!

Yeah the full DIY kit with chassis, all parts, etc. was under 2 grand depending on specs and options.

whatever Frank plays in Nights, and J Mascis play is fine by me.
otherwise I dig plexis. Marshalls just seem like one of those pieces of gear that are "eh" untweeked, but really good when tweeked.
Frank here. I indeed play a JCM 800 2203 100 watt "tweaked" (a few capacitor value modifications and modded to KT88s) and I haven't found an amp that even comes close for headroom. My fuzzes literally bloom out of it with the KT88s in it. When I switched from EL34s to KT88s it was like knocking out a wall in room in terms of frequency spectrum, like going from |____| to |_________________|. Booming bass, crisp mids, and headroom for days. I play on the low (clean) input and into 4 Celestion 75 watt speakers which allows for a very wide range of dynamics. My friend has an early 90s Plexi reissue that had a master volume mod but he plays with a strat with some hot, thick single coil pickups, and it crunches up like a humbucker, even when he dials the MV wide open. No ice pick treble. I really also think it has to do with using the right set of speakers. Low wattage celestions (vintage 30s) seem to be very treble-y. The aforementioned friend plays through Carvin speakers and it sound unbelievably crunchy. I tried my amp through them and I could actually dial up the treble past 2 without making ears bleed. Speakers are as important as the amp driving them.

I will also second Laney's as a very close and cost effective British sounding amp. I've heard JCM 800 tones out of Laney Pro heads and also AC30 sounds out of the 30 watt Laney combos. A little less presence and sparkle on the cleans on the Laney's compared to the Vox but the same sounding overdrive/crunchy sounds when driven. Laney's are a solid amp, I'd totally pick one up if the price was right.

Re: Let's talk Marshall
i love JCM 800's to death. my preference is with 6550's. it's bassier and the beak up is tight and cleaner.
my plexi has been tweeked with diff transformers, caps, and prolly other shite i don't know about. it is bad ass, not trebley and when plugged in with a treble boost, it makes me go: "OK this is what everyone was talking about"....but it's too loud for me, and i love loudness.
for punk rock..give me the 800....for noisy music i'd use the super lead.....
the jcm through a 4/12 combined with a selmer bass and treble 50 through a 4/10, is like sex for the first time.

yep i got a 1959/1987x type amp im building right now called Stonehenge. Its more less a superlead but I did some tweaks added a few controls.
any builder can do a marshall clone, with any kinda mods
a Kt88 version would be nice. loads of low
