A REALLY DUMB QUESTION

Hey guys

So, as of our last show (and it's been a long time coming), my bassist's cabinet hasn't quite blown YET, but it's giving the rumble sound like it's about to give up (basically a motor-boating-type sound when low notes are hit at ANY volume)

I'd like to see if there is a way I can open up the grill and see if it really is torn or if something is loose inside.

HOWEVER, IF IT IS DEAD...

Bassist and I are broke... but I see a wealth of 4 x 12 cabs used at guitar center for next to nothing.

Would this be a "fine fix for now" solution?

It's a GK600 I believe? 300 watts.

Haha not a problem man. If you've got a spare guitar head he could just run that through a 4x12... That's what I've been doing

we're not in a huge hurry.

we're not reforming until mid summer anyways, so we both have time to pool our money together.

you really don't want to run a bass through most guitar speakers if you can help it. they're not designed to reproduce the low frequencies, and it'll shake the voice coils to pieces. you should be able to find a serviceable bass speaker for $50-75 and swap it into the cabinet.

Is your bass player usins 12 inch speakers? because I MAY be taking some Okay ones out of a cab that I have (a 2-12) by then.

If the cab itself is constructed ok, and you have a bit of cash, buy a couple of replacement speakers from Eminence. They're cheap (relatively speaking) and I'm really chuffed with mine. Although I can only comment on their guitar speakers and not their bass stuff, but they were really cool to deal with, which was surprising for a big (?) corporation. There are probably heaps of other good speaker manufacturers as well - I was sick of my Celestions so I didn't bother really looking at alternatives from them, and there weren't that many other alternatives I could afford over here in Ikea land.

I don't know if your cab has 10s or not, but a while back I blew my 410 and didn't have a ton of money for speakers. Ended up ordering four of the Celestion TF1020 from Avatar on their specials page. The price on those is pretty good and I'm plenty happy with how the cab sounds now. Pretty sure I got 8 ohms though and it looks like they only have 16s listed now, but I don't know what you need.

One thought to make life easy: if the bass amp has some sort of high-pass filter, the guitar cab might be doable if the mid-band power handling is enough. Shorter version: give up subs in the bass and you don't have subs that kill the guitar speakers. Probably not the sound he's chasing, though.

Why is a new cab and maybe changing out the speakers a cheaper option than replacing or repairing the speaker in the bass cab?

Can always do 1 or 2 at a time during your hiatus from evil.

And then watch for a 2x10 or 1x15 to hold over as a backup thereafter.
