Yes!! To control the modulation over the loop with the foot while playing.

To control the playback speed of the loop!

Guysguysguysguys... relax
I'm not wanting to do this as a commercial product for sale. It's not getting a patent or something. Just a fun little project so I don't have to do stupid lab stuff.
I'm also not working with dsp. So the whole modulation thing over the loop is tricky to say it nicely. I was planning on using the phones light sensor as a light probe in connection with the g-sensor for crazy stuff.
I don't know how to realize the looper idea. Never worked with something like this.. although using dsp and looping stuff would include learning a whole bunch of new stuff.

But, but if... ...if you make a looper.... ...You would send it to me, right?

Yeah, when I read USB port my first thought was Looper too.
USB to load it with .wav Loops, bluetooth to feed it field recordings via bluetooth headset or phone mic, g-sensor for crazy stuff. sounds about right. How about one axis of the sensor for playback speed and one for pitch?

Dig this, just hear me out.
Muff clone with a USB port on it. 2 LEDs on that pedal -- one lights up when the pedal is engaged.
The other?
When you hook it up to your PC...THE OTHER LED LIGHTS UP.

 Now THAT is really.. wow... shit just got real.

But srsly guys.... the looper idea is kind of cool... anyone know some good looper ic's/circuits as a base to start off from? I have never worked with loopers before and I need to know the project until next week so yeah... jumping into the freezing cold water here...

Thanks guys!
I just had a completely new idea - a mobile phone synth ring mod effectpedal.
Basically a synth that is controllable via your phones g sensor, light sensor and on screen sliders/parameters (Bluetooth) but with the stomp of a switch it turns into a ring mod where the synth signal acts as the modulating carrier signal.
USB connection to control the synth/save&load presets maybe. It would also be cool to save presets on the phone.

Just put a disconnected USB port on it.

Or put a connected USB in it so you can upload/download loops to/from a computer.

In wav format. So you can then use them in Cubase or Protools, etc...

this actually isn't that far off from what im doing for the wrong side rev c. sort of the ultimate lofi looper. (well ultimate is subjective of course). but im using sd card for memory so you literally can have hours of loops. actually i think a 4 gb card will hold about 6 days of loops at sampling rate/res comparable to that IC used on the madbean board.

sounds pretty good.

also if you want to make a looper (in the future) basically all you need is an A/D D/A setup and access somehow to large amounts of memory (many solutions). you dont need any real "DSP" techniques cause, in its most basic form, all you are doing is storing data from the A/D in memory then retrieving data from memory and putting it on the D/A. save/load/save/load/save and a few buttons to stop and start this and... thats it really. If you do any programming just imagine having 2 pointers cycling on the same array. one pointer acts as the playback head and one pointer acts as the record head. The array is just the stored audio samples.

i made something real shitty a long time ago with small amount of ram and some knob to just control the playback rate and direction of the playback head, as well as the length of the clip. you can see a vid here, if you ever want any help with similar code let me know. There is no 'processing' done on the sound at all. just save/load.

http://youtu.be/FhuDJ2jMUr0

although i obviously haven't seen the code, the general idea of the sexy sonic crayon glitch thing coming out is similar only with some wonderfully exotic ways of sequencing the pointers through the array so you get slices and trippy reversed shit (speculation).

Yeah, I was thinking a/d -memory -d/a too.. but the sampling rate would be pretty low, I imagine. I would need around 10-12k Hz sampling rate, damn I had problems reaching the 10k Hz I have on my bit crusher now. Sampling and saving on an external eeprom takes up even more time. I got the spi bus running pretty fast but I don't think the looper would be high quality enough to actually use the files in cubase or something, yet alone to convert the data into .wav format is quite difficult to me.
Idk...

ya well if your ever up for it you should look into 'paging'. most devices have some sort of page read (or in the case of SD that is all you can do). You can do some tricks with buffering if you have slow memory. Basically you batch load large consecutive chunks of memory from the memory device into local ram. Since they are consecutive you only have to send the first address to retrieve the whole page. This saves a lot of time on SPI bus. Although you have to be a bit more organized i dont think there is any problem with even hi-fi on SD and the like. Consider that most digital cameras can record HD video direct to SD, which certainly contain more information than a typical audio file (although thats only writing, where this requires reading and writing but still.) .wav is just PCM with some nice header that specifies number of channels etc. So other than the header it is just literally the samples uncompressed. .wav can have variable sampling rates (from file to file) so as long as you specify the sampling rate in the header any program will be able to use it. Im sure you could do it, seems like you know whats up. (: but for a school project i would stick to something you are comfortable with just because of deadlines and crap like that.

well since this isn't gonna be a product we as a community can purchase, who's up for the challenge of making it?!?!?

How about a choppy tremolo pedal that launches a stroboscope in sync?
