Beethovens String Quartets are probably the most beautiful music ever made. His early are wonderful, and there's a lot of weird dissonant shit on his late quartets and the grosse fuge. I bought a 9 LP box of these and it's fantastic.

Shostakovich's string quartets too, as well as Cello Concertos, Chamber Music, and violin concertos are fantastic. I like his symphonies too but I rarely get a chance to really absorb them like his smaller works. They were less scrutinized by Stalin so he was able to appropriate his feelings rather than the feelings of how the Russian communists thought he should be writing.

Alban Bergs works, Piano Sonato, Lyric Suite, quartet, Lulu, etc are all favorites. I like his work more than his mentor.

Of course Arvo Part, Mahler, Schoeberg, etc are all wonderful.

Totally agreed on Beethoven's string quartets. Also, Haydn, who basically invented the string quartet, has some amazing ones. His Emperor Quartet is so fucking awesome, Germany uses it's second movement for their national anthem.

Also, Bach's double violin concerto is amazing.

Fuck yeah bro, my mother in law has a 40 disc Haydn box set - they were so cheap I wished I bought one too. I've ripped most of it though. Haydn won't mind. He's dead.
