I know it's not news to anyone, but seriously the WBC is fucking terrible (this hits me like it's the first time hearing about them every time I look them up). I'm not one to advocate attacking people... but I would not mind it if it became common practice for people to turn hoses on them every time they stepped out of their houses.

Sidenote: I have an awful habit of going online just to watch/read about/listen to people that infuriate me. I frequently go on Amazon, look up a book, or game, or movie I love and then read all the 1 star reviews. It's a problem.

What the fuck! Enders game is classic sci fi, It also has some great lessons for empathy and morality. Jesus, every kid should be exposed to this book....it needs to be approached appropriately by the teacher, but to call the cops....What the fuck! Read it first from cover to cover then try to judge it......

i think Ender's Game is a good read, but i do agree with this criticism: http://www4.ncsu.edu/~tenshi/Killer_000.htm. tl;dr: OSC argues that intent outweighs consequence in judging a character. he crafts and impossibly innocent protagonist who repeatedly kills and ultimately commits genocide, but he can't be held accountable for any of it.

of course, whether or not i agree with what the author thinks, i like that the book might raise questions and stir up discussion. i can't imagine any good reason that the book would be inappropriate for middle school kids, and that parent needs to seriously lighten up.
please and thank you.

I only read the first section of that so far (up to "The Victim Hero") but at this point I feel like the person that wrote this hasn't actually read the book, or any of the books that follow.

For one thing, if you have read Ender's Game, you know that to say Ender had good or ill intentions is ridiculous. As far as the character knew he was playing a battle simulation game. He is unaware that what he has doing is real, or has any consequences at all outside of winning or losing in a game. The following books mainly consist of him trying to atone for his crimes, despite the fact that others had created the situation into which he was involuntarily thrown. Going further than that, I didn't feel that the morality of actions occurring throughout the series was addressed in a thorough way until the fourth book "Children of the Mind". If you didn't read up to that, then you are left with an incomplete portrait of the character.

Well, when we teach it we talk about Nazi Germany and the holocaust. Ender' s Game is an engaging metaphor for that part of world history....Warfield dropping the bomb, McNamara' s war math and of course the idea of proportional response.

Mr. Kessel is a bit of an arrogant academic type...I think he just wished his sci-fi writing was as impactful. Just sayin'....

Soo I took my cat to the vet and there's nothing glaringly wrong with her. We're just gonna keep an eye on her and bring her back for blood tests if she doesn't get better, but she's doing much better already.
