Which deluxe memory man, man???

Post by Boxbie »

I tried my friends ye olde deluxe memory man. It was excellent.
The olde ones are a bit pricey. Are any of the following good?

http://www.ehx.com/products/deluxe-memory-man-tap-tempo <- The loop thrills me. 1100ms. I demand no less! cons; those repeat buttons looks like the sort of junk that will break.

http://www.ehx.com/products/deluxe-memory-man <- I think I've heard disparaging remarks about the chips in these? It also doesn't specify the delay length.

http://www.ehx.com/products/deluxe-memory-man-tap-tempo-550 <-- 550ms??? Get behind me satan!!!!!

So, what are your thoughts on these newbies? :poke:

The simple reissue one sounds good, no problem with the chips imo, unless there are some that got screwed up. It'll be about 550ms, which is what the old ones are (they sort of float around 550 because each is calibrated a bit differently). The old ones are gorgeous, and I always see them cheaper than new ones except for the few that are put up for insane prices by jerks.

No experience with any of the tap temp ones, I know Adoom on this board has one though, he'd be a good person to ask.

Isn't that DMM TT practically impossible to get now for a half-decent price? Have been seeing them being flipped on other sites for more than $500.

Get the good ol' DMM. Nothing sounds like it. And don't settle for anything less. If you really want tap tempo, imo you shouldn't be looking at the DMM. That being said, NOTHING sounds like a DMM.

The DMMTT has been discontinued, there are a few floating around here and there, but good luck finding 'em at MSRP. Most have been snatched up and are fetching in the neighborhood of $500 on the used market. Apparently these things have all been calibrated PERFECTLY... really ethereal sounding. But don't let the expensive price, feedback loop, and promise of long delay times entice you - buy it because you want it for ALL of its features (and if you've got the cash, these things will be getting expensive).

DMMTT-550 is the same circuit as the aforementioned DMMTT, but with the 3008 instead of 3005 chips for half the delay time.

All of the "Boy" and "Toy" derivatives, regardless of nomenclature, use cheaper Chinese chips instead of the two classic chips I just mentioned. Not necessarily better or worse sounding, but different.

All I can say, is that I got a Timeline not too long after it came out, and while it's brilliant my "if I were stranded on a desert island..." pedal is still the DMM.

Don't worry too much about the newer version of the dmm vs old / the chips. If it was calibrated properly it will sound awesome.

As for the tap tempo ones, the others covered it.

The deluxe memory boy is an excellent delay.... But not much like the dmm.
Still, the dmb is probably the best bang for your buck delay out there right now.

Yea go for the reissue dmm or the dmb. I've played both and preferred the boy cause its darker and grittier but either is good stuff.

I rock the DMB, which uses the cheaper chinese chips, but I still think it sounds fantastic. I'd say that the repeats are a little grimier and more lo-fi than the DMM, but we're not talking huge differences here. It's still a similar vibe. Plus, I just love all of the crazy options with it. Expression control of feedback is the greatest thing EVAR.

I didn't know there were so many XO Memory Men. I'd get the 550 because it's the only XO pedal that looks good to me...

With that said I have an old rusty Memory Man and love the shit out of it. I've had a Memory Boy and it was fun but the controls kind of freak out easily, which was difficult for someone like me who likes to keep his delays right on the edge of going out of control.

Hmm... All interesting stuff.

To be honest, I don't really care about tap tempo.
The thing I liked about the DMMTT was the expression in and loop (whether I would actually use them is unlikely...).

Can I get any more info on the straight DMM reissue http://www.ehx.com/products/deluxe-memory-man?

Has anyone actually used one? does it have the micronchips?

I've used one and I liked it, having owned a big box original. Pretty sure any differences are just due to calibration of individual models.

Howdy dudey! :hello:

The Tap Tempo, or the blue one, is being flipped for ridiculous money now. There's a retail outlet in Dubin selling one for E450, which is close to $600. It's a lovely delay, but that's Echoczar money like. Not worth that. I picked one up when the European stock came out, and it's lovely. not worth that money though. Very little is.

The Deluxe Memory Boy, which my bandmate has, compares VERY favourably to the DMMTT, less pristine repeats, but I love the qualities of those repeats, and it has more or less an identical feature set, aside from half the delay time.

I seriously recommend it. Great pedal for a great price.
I play.
