VHT special 6

Post by lapsteel »

Anyone have experience with this amp?

I just got mine last week and it absolutely kills! It was a toss up between a v.3 valve jr. combo and ac4tv10, but the price, gain boost function, standby control, and 6 amps really won it for me.... I can actually use this to jam at moderate levels.... The ac4tv10 would have been great to practice, but I was concerned that it just would cut it volume-wise if I needed something portable to jam with.... The v. 3 valve jr. was tough to find and when I did it was way overpriced....even used v.2 people expected nearly $200.

The special six has 4,8, and 16 line outs to match just about any cab if I want to stretch my tone and volume out a bit...nice. It also takes pedals very well. I have been pushing it with my Kaeden drive and it sound awesome.... All in all an very nice little amp. only downside was that it was handwired in China by overworked nine year olds... which I absolutely hate and feel guilty over...

Anybody hit this amp with mods ?

No firsthand experience, but I've heard good things.

If they're anything like the older VHT stuff it should be pretty awesome.

Not quite the same vibe as the now Fryette amps but still very good value for how cheap they are

How about jamming with it, I know 6 watts (even in 3 watt mode) is plenty for playing by yourself, but can it keep up with moderate drumming? Any experience?

I would say that you'd need at least 15 watts to jam with a drummer, but it sorta depends on the drummer.

Okay, we not only rehearsed and jammed with it, we also gigged... mic'd, but still ;)

sounded fucking marvelous turned on full volume and hit with a Fuzz Face

anyway - can sound a little boxy, it's VERY small, so no wonder... but i'd hit it :)

Good to hear!
I got a jam set up for tomorrow.... so this should be a good test. Did you swap the tubes or do any mods?

This amp plays super well with effects. I see you got something from Schlatte....I have his big muff styled pedal coming in soon. Can't wait to slam this amp with some fat muff tones.

I got one of these not too long ago, haven't changed the tubes yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

Does sound good with effects as relatively low volumes to boot. Still not super quiet.

It's a REALLY solid little amp for the money.

Quick review:

Soo played with some drums (and briefly some bass) and it held up pretty good. The speaker needs a little more breaking in time I think but overall it was loud enough. I started on the low channel which was pretty cool and dark, but ended up using the hi channel more it had a nice glossy tone. I used the full 6 watt setting with the tone just before half and the volume at a little over 3/4. I used the gain boost feature sparingly, because I was driving pretty hard with my pedal but it was good to have some gain on tap to step out for solos. I ran a Kaeden, Ab synth, p90 and a ghost echo it played well with all of them...It was a little buzzy but nothing unsettling (pretty minor really), however I should note I have yet to insulate my wiring harness and my cables are a little sick looking.... so this kind of thing is no surprise. I was really happy with the overall tone, played straight and pushed it loud for two hours and it was pretty inspiring. This little amp is really a good value and I definately can recommend it to anyone looking for a low watt amp to play at home and carry to jams. Just wish it was made here.... apologies to the young people who had to solder it for a pittence in China...

Now alls I gotta do is build a killer 4X12....

Anybody know if the cab/enclosure/baffle is particle board or plywood?

Finger jointed plywood is what I gathered from a quick search.
