Those of you that have already discussed in the iPad as a musicians tool I have created before ILF went down and shot two weeks to Mars know that I was thinking about buying an iPad. And since I don't really need one I needed to justify the purchase (was a good opportunity through work) to myself. So, now I have got one and I was thinking that some of you might still have some awesome apps that I and the rest of us need.
I have already tried these:
Jasuto - probably seeing a video demo of the first version of this made me want an iPhone back when they were new. Now I have got it and this is awesome. I have yet to find out how it actually works, but I already had some great drone sounds after fiddling with it for less than an hour. I guess this will only get better if I get a keayboard that I can use to actually play it. It is pretty damn complicated but I think it will be lots of fun once I really understood what it does.
Rhythm Studio - very nice, sounds like an okay implementation of classic drum machines and probably suits all my needs for drum machines. Synth bass is a plus.
iMaschine - I love that it's so simple to create your own set of samples that you can use on both the trigger pads and on the keys. The recording function seems not responsive enough. I always end up with only half of what I played recorded. Nice enough but it actually does not thrill me too much. Quantizing on this thing is fun though.
Garage Band - I hate to record with a click. I am reasonably tight when playing, but clicks just distract me. So either I try to play on click and fuck up or I try and play free but then there is always a little difference between what I play and what Garage band wants me to play, because I have not yet found a way to use it as a simple recorder without dominating me on it having to be 8 bars of 120 bpm. I know this is for the easy implementation of the Midi/simple instruments stuff but it's not the way I play, and not what I'd use a multitrack-recorder for. So this one's not for me.
Stuff I want to check out:
Moog Filtatron
Donut Looper (Great idea this one!)
Tascam 4-Track Tape
CP 1919 (Drone synth - check out the vids!)
Orphion (Intuitive instrument, play on pads, video is great for this one too)
Maybe DM-1 Drum Machine (Might be more Hi-Fi than the rhythm studio app, not sure if I need that though.)
Anything else you guys can think of that I need to check out?
