My band got a gig at the largest venue in Gainesville (besides the football stadium or basketball arena on UF campus)! It's an Earthday event, on April 22nd. There should be several thousand people there, the promoter is becoming kind of a big deal. He has been doing big shows lately.
Anyways this is what we needed. We have been in a rut, kind of, playing the same couple of okay clubs/bars after playing the better ones. This town is weird, so many bands, so many hipsters. We have had a few strikes against us. There are 3 girls and me in the band, it adds an under dog element. And we don't get fucked-up with the other bands either. We are all locals(in this transient town) and have home lives.
We have decided to start gigging more out of town and we will keep that plan. We have some festival oppurtunities coming up too. Just when I was going to become a bit jaded about G-ville this came through.

And totally leave the 352. When we play Lake Charles....everyone's like "eh" and it's just a bummer show. Not many compliments afterwards. And it's a lot of our friends. But Beaumont and Lafayette feel like home towns. We get treated like kings. Tons of compliment after the shows. Everyone wants to hang with us afterwards like we're cool shit. We get paid more in town but the outer stuff is where the egos get inflated.

I hear ya on getting out of town. Spokane is sorta of same way,...there are quite a few tasty musicians that I've jammed with and a lot of them have left for greener pastures in Portland, Seattle, Cali and Arizona/New Mexico. I honestly have a good time playing the dive bars and clubs around town,....but we want to buy a van and get out of town. I'm settled here so I have no desire to move,....but I also realize that getting big in the music industry is a pipe dream that a lot of these guys think will be a reality if they move to the right town.

We are playing the Local Knitting Factory which is one of the larger venues in town,,....but I don't expect that place to be too packed for a locals show. We are also potentially gonna pick up a gig for Hemp Expo (like Hempfest,....but without some thief ripping off the city) and another potentially larger show at the Bing Crosby which is a locally owned theater that rivals the Knit in size, but is a lot older/has more character.

's an interesting read. it's funny, because i've made a lot of the same points with club owners. out here there's a few places that do free to the public shows and give you a percent of a percent of the bar. they can afford it because they're in Oakland so they get subsidized to help gentrify and nicen (shuddup. it's a word. To Make Nicer - nicen. or niceTATE) up the area. but they book fucking ANYbody. one spot in particular is a weird design for live music. it's like a big U with the stage on one side and the bar on the other. and a projector set up in the bar area so you can see the band. fucking SUCKS. there can be like 50 people there and you might see 2 if you're on stage. and they always book 4 bands and the last one doesn't go on till about 12.30 or 1, but the local public transit stops running at 1. kinda weird.

I was just starting to feel pigeon-holed as a 1982 band, 1982 is a dive, but a great dive. The thing is Against Me!, Hot Water Music, and Less than Jake were all 1982 bands as well. Gigging out of town did them some good...
I am glad we already have a van. It has been a few years since I have played out of town.
Warwick, Those venues and events sound dope.
Sosusa, we shall rock out together this summer. I am just trying to nail some dates that I have to be in town for.

Festivals and mintours for the summer!

Yeah Behndy, there is one place in particular that is layed out weird. The bar and pool tables are on one side of the building, and the music venue side is on another. They have TVs in the bar that play the bands. I have literally played shows were it is just the bands watching each other and 100 people watching it on TV. You get done and are like that was a televised practice.

That's it. I'm currently in negotiations with Losers' Reunion. Waiting to see if some unsavory things get cleaned up or not. If it doesn't, I'll be kicking Jet Jaguar into high gear, soon. Either way, I should be gigging regularly by the summer with someone.
