Re: Sonic Youth - Antenna
Damn. I haven't really listened to anything by Sonic Youth since Washing Machine, I'd kind of lost track of them. So, in a weird way, I wanted to hate this, kind of have an excuse to continue ignoring them.
But I like it. I really like it.
Bastards.
How do they do that?

I really have had trouble getting into these guys. I know, everything i listen to points to them, but i just haven't got it yet. Well, Antenna is fucking awesome.
Sacred Trickster, that fucking song is what i'm all about.
I'm really stoked to get the new record.
So thanks

I remember back in high school I got a bunch of SY records but never could really get into them. It wasn't until I saw them live that I started to LOVE them. It seriously changed my life! I finally understood what people meant when they say "religious experience", because it really was. I highly suggest Murray Street if you haven't heard it.
Or if you want rougher early Sonic Youth I would go for EVOL or Sister.

Re: Sonic Youth - Antenna
My introduction to SY was with Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star...not the best album to start with, and I really, really struggled to get into them. Wasn't really until I got Dirty that I "got" them. Fell in love with them over Washing Machine and Daydream Nation, but the last few years I've just felt that they've got a "sound" now, and everything was just starting to sound the same.
But I think I need to go and listen to the albums I've missed from Washing Machine onwards and re-assess. I'm liking what I'm hearing of the new material.

Anything that particularly sticks out as something to avoid?

Haha yeah: NYC ghost and flowers! The name is cool but beware because it's a fucking trap. I used to hate sonic nurse but I grew to like it.
You might like rather ripped if you like dirty. The songs are short and poppy.

Re: Sonic Youth - Antenna
NYC Ghosts... was the one they did after their gear was stolen, right? I'd heard it wasn't that great. I'll listen to some tracks online before thinking about parting with cash.
In all honesty, I much more fond of SY's extended noise jams than their poppy songs. Their "In the Fishtank" collaboration with the Ex and ICP was awesome.

New album is awesome. Go and get it. Rather Ripped is awesome too.
Murray Street is my favorite. Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style and Karen Revisited are probably their best songs.
Some of the early early stuff like Confusion is Sex and Bad Moon Rising are silly and a bit pointless, SY themselves have acknowledge those albums of being more of "statements" then music really (they did come up during the "No-Wave" movement). But that's not to say a few very awesome songs pop up in the middle of those albums. Washing Machine is a bit of a snoozer for me. But other than that the band, when they hit their stride, they are transcendent.

Re: Sonic Youth - Antenna
i thought washing machine was totally lame when it came out, but now i like it.
however i don't get why they hacked off the last 5 minutes of the diamond sea (the full version is on the destroyed room), that's when it gets interesting!
