I'm going to be really controversial now and say that I think Loveless is overrated.

Blasphemy, I know. Sorry. I like it, but meh, I dunno.

Anyway, check out Swervedriver, they kick the shit out of everyone else from that scene, imo.

I disagree, in part, with the Loveless statement, but I agree that Swervedriver are totally awesome. They are consistently overlooked and underrated. One of the best shoegaze bands.

That Fleeting Joys band totally aped MBV's sound. It's too blatant. The music is pretty good, but come on, the fuzz textures, vocals and especially the keyboard/samples they use are EXACTLY the same as MBV. It hits a little to close for comfort. Not a bad band, the music is there, some cool melodies, but jesus, step outside the MBV box a little bit and get a few other influences or something.

swervedriver = one of the best bands ever, but i would say they transcend shoegaze, as i've heard adam franklin play the songs by himself on acoustic and they're just as good.

mbv....stopped being able to listen to loveless a long time ago. i think it's great but it's not sgt. pepper, i don't hear anything new after the 100th time listening. however I totally LOVE their pre-creation records now, which sound way different.


and anything involving that douche from death by audio is a big thumbs down.

Yeah I think the Deerhunter to MBV comparisons are pretty lazy, don't really get that. I wouldn't even call them shoegaze a lot of the time.

I like Guitar. Some moments are too poppy for me, but there's some really interesting guitar parts that seem to build on MBV stuff rather than stealing it like some bands mentioned.

I don't know if anyone mentioned LSD and the Search for God, but they're similar to Ringo Deathstarr who I really like. Can't wait until a full-length from both. Another newer one is A Place to Bury Strangers that kinda have the Jesus and the Mary Chain feel with some more post-MBV conventions going on. Lo-fi and punky more than a lot of other stuff.

Lastly, my favorite electro-shoegaze, Ulrich Schnauss, specifically the album A Strangely Isolated Place. Think analogue 70s ambient synths meets classic wall of sound gaze. As good if not better than any of the classic shoegaze albums, in my opinion. Just straight up beautiful.

also, I can totally second your opinion involving Loveless and marijuana. I don't want to get off topic again and go back and forth with discussions about whether the album is great or not, but I will say that smoking a J, putting on some good headphones and listening to Loveless all the way through changed my opinion of that record for the better

Yeah. Ulrich Schnauss is the man. I never know whether or not to consider him shoegaze. I guess i'll give it the big O.K. in my book. yay for semantics and genrefication!

It's true. Neil Halstead is another one who can pull that off. Not to mention most of the songs already have acoustic guitar rhythm tracks

TIGERDRIVER!! Your icon, one is one of my alltime favourite records! Mercury Rev - Yerself Is Steam. OMFG some of the most amazing sonic moment's i've ever heard are on that record. Namely, The lead guitar on Chasing A Bee.

Anyone listened to the new Horrors album, Primary Colours? Very unexpectedly shoegaze and its amazing!

I'm also in love with the Pains of Being Pure At Heart LP, it's more Smiths-like than My Bloddy Valentine-like though, but still shoegaze.
