Learning/Practice Regimens/Anti-Regimens

Post by dorfmeister »

I am curious as to what you practice on your gitfiddle?

What is your regimen/anti-regiment for developing your guitar skills.

I wail anarchically a good bit of the time but I have also been using various learning materials.

I usually just play guitar, I never really sit down and practice it as if it were an instrument. Usually I progress by seeing or learning a new technique and I slowly just throw it into my playing at random times until it eventually becomes a part of my playing. I'm usually too busy trying to write a song.

Practicing is boring to me though, I just get tired of doing something a certain way and take of doing something else. For instance songs that require flat picking I start flat picking but eventually I just start strumming, I can't take it.... I just want to play the song immediately cause really its the lyrics I give a shit about.

This is a problem when I want to play another artist's song, because if I get stuck on a part I just don't play the song. Then a month or two later I'll try it again and eventually I'm able to play it.

With that being said I really respect metal guitarists because I could never play a complex riff that fast.....then again I don't know where I'd put it in my music.
I have been taking a music theory and keyboarding class at college though.

I've decided to lose the pick and just play with my fingers. This has forced me pretty much to dump all the habits and cliches of my previous pick playing. They just don't fall under the fingers anymore.

It also has forced me to slow down. I also think my rhythm playing is becoming far better, unconventional and more precise. This was the way I was meant to play.

Just curious what every body is up to in terms of developing guitar.

I've been playing drums a lot. Great cross training for guitar.
