I just sent Nick an Email inquiring as to a potential M/B 400+ clone. I know glass is going to be pretty expensive for such a project (something like 12 output tubes[6L6s I believe]).

If Nick quotes me an attractive price it may be better to go through him rather than deal with a used amp and having to have it serviced and re-tubed.

I re-tubed a 400+ once. It wasn't pretty.

I saw this picture of Hendrix, all he used was a wah.... And not even the Jim Dunlop Jimi Hedrix wah, just some old thing.....
Jimi didn't realise the horrible tone suck we had to listen to every time he used that wah.

Yeah,...and I'm not completely sold on whether or not I need as much power that the 4hundoplus outputs.

anything over 100/120W gets pricey, iron costs are nice at sub 200W range. Once your looking for 4 x Kt88 or > with 200W or > and esp designed for bass, then pricey is going to be closer to the 1.8-1.9k (200W) or 2-2.2k or > for 300W+

If u ask other builders they wil quote you 3k or more so i consider 2k-2.2k pretty reasonable

No gripe with the price :)

Just commenting on the power output of the 400+. For what I want to do,....push the power section into compression,....I'm wondering if I'm going to have to crank 500watts to the point of being too obnoxiously loud for my bandmates and venues, but there are ways around that (downsize the wall of cabs,...use a power attenuator).

While I would certainly entertain one of Nick's amps for guitar (seriously they are sexy as hell and reasonable),....I'm thinking that my best and most cost affective bet is to attempt a used 400+ and figure out if I do indeed need to work around the output or if cranking the amp into compression is totally necessary. Keep in mind my band is pretty loud to begin with (especially for a trio),...so I could be worrying about nothing.

From my experience so far, I don't get why any bassist would need more than 200 tube watts unless he's playing fucking Madison Square Garden. Especially if you want to get any sort of power-amp breakup.

Yea, a used model aint too bad. If the amp is only 15 years old, i dont think it would need any major recaps til another 5-10 years. Tube replacing sucks, thats a ton of tubes tho.
