I gotta say that the first Interpol album is really fucking good. I don't think they've hit that high since.
it also sounded the best, IMHO (in terms of production)

Yep, it's my favourite album of their's too.
Non-fuzzy bands high in my listening rotation are Belle and Sebastian, Foals, and Washed Out.

Radiohead. a lot of melodic British stuff with clever and/or post-Ray Davies character-sketch lyrics e.g. Brian Eno, early David Bowie, Belle and Sebastian, Blur. Sigur Ros. the Grateful Dead. ambient techno. Charles Mingus.

tons of stuff. The Smiths, yeah, great answer. 60's surf. Can, Neu!, shit like that. Ragga jungle. James Brown, The Meters, Fela. John Fahey and all who've surfed in his wake. Beefheart's not so fuzzy. not jazz so much since I stopped smoking weed.
Maybe partying will help.

This right here. Those guitar harmonies are just so gorgeous. Untitled and The New kick some serious ass. I wish Paul Banks still had his old of singing voice that he had on Turn On the Bright Lights though, on the later albums it started sounding rather forced for some reason.
On a related note, Joy Division for life.
Nick Drake is someone I could listen to for hours and never get bored. Such an amazing singer songwriter. And an acoustic guitar prodigy.

When I am mellow I listen to Ron Sexsmith, Be Good Tanyas, sometimes some sweet reggae feels good too, Peter Tosh.
Sometime when I wanna chill a little from the JB's, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield...etc... hits the spot. Oh Sam Cooke too

i forgot the Smiths in my group of witty British bands. and the Krautrock. i have a compilation disc i made from the first 2 Neu! albums that gets loads of car time. and of course with a name like that i loves teh dubz. Blood & Fire and the Basic Channel reggae imprints are my friends.

Noah and the Whale, Violent Femmes, Arcade Fire, I really enjoy acoustic Foo Fighters... um... Vivian Girls. The Dresden Dolls... There's a lot that don't particular center around fuzz but happen to use it from time to time.
