Expression Controlled Wah Pedal

Post by proroby »

In order to save space on my board I have gotten rid of my wah and haven't been using one for a couple months. I miss one dearly. I haven't used a traditional wah in a year, my last ones were fuzz wahs.

Now to the question at hand. I want a pedal that I can use as a wah but control it with an expression pedal off the board.

Ideas I've gathered so far:

M5
Cyber Psychic

That's it...

Its not anything that couldn't be done.

Wah circuit in a box, expression input replaces where the standard wah pot would be.
Just gotta make sure the exp pedal has the correct or similar value...

I'm sure if you were to ask around, one of the many DIYers would be more than happy to build something for ya. :thumb:

I'm not following...

Maybe I didn't explain the best. I want a pedal that has an exp/cv control input to control a filter in a similar way a wah would work. Or in the case of the m5, wah modeling controlled off the board with an exp. pedal.

The actual pedal would be on my board.

Yeah, thats what i meant. Like a remote box on the board with an exp. input. That way you can control the filter with an exp. pedal off the board, like a standard wah.

Summed up: guts of the wah in a pedal on the board, and the ability to control it via exp pedal?

At least thats what im getting out of it, but I may just be a bad reader.

Ahh, I follow. I wonder if that would sound good and how well it would work. Would I be able to turn it in with the exp. pedal off the board?

That's my biggest concern with the m5. I would have to turn that on then move over to the exp pedal to start controlling the wah.

The Fairfield Circuitry Four Eyes Fuzz, while obviously not anything resembling a wah, can get some "wah like" sounds at certain settings with an expression pedal. It's sort of limited in its application though. This may or may not be helpful to you depending on how fully functional a wah you'd like.

I've no experience with this, but:

I'm sure there're more pedals that I can't think of right now.

The Cyber Psychic is awesome, but pretty pricey.

You would need a bypass switch on the exp pedal. which wont happen. unless you have one made from a wah enclosure or similar.

You could however, have a remote box for the bypass. Also doable.

The Gullmore looks cool, though I wouldn't use that seagull thing I don't think.

That Jacques looks great. The demo video isn't very good unfortunately. The wah didn't get bassy enough for me, but again with that video it's tough to tell.

Great recommendations, thanks a bunch. Hope more keep coming :thumb:

That's what I took from it as well.

I just recently sold the guts of a crybaby to nieh for this very thing. You could put the wah in a box, with a pot for the sweep (like the treadle would do), and that could be used for cocked wah sounds by itself. Add the expression jack to the pot, and then you could wah wah that way with an expression pedal. Or if you had one of those Third Hand things that twists the knob its on, you wouldn't need the expression jack/pedal cause it'd do the same thing.

The M9 is a great option, because the wahs have clean blend, and you can place EQ before and/or after and sweep that too.

The Eventide Modfactor is also an amazing wah machine with lots of great sounds and expression options.

Also, Moogerfoogers, Source Audio wahs and envelope filters, EHX Enigma, Riddle, Talking Machine & Worm, WMD Super Fatman...
