Help me choose my first amp mic
I've been toying around for quite some time with actually mic'ing my amps instead of going direct into the computer. I need something that can handle a Valve Junior, but also a 100 watt Peavey. I'm looking to keep it under $100 if I can. Any suggestions? I'm pretty much clueless in regards to microphones

This is a Shure Sm57
More records then you can imagine have used this mic
It is the starting point
It is the standard
It rocks
and stuff.

I've heard that there are plenty of fakes of these around, is it best to go through some place like Musicians Friend to purchase one?

Anyone the is Shure dealer should have a real one. If you like dealing with MF then fine, I don't [every time I order from them my spam doubles] I have bought my last two and a 58 from Sweetwater

Don't support Shure directly because they're a crap company.
Also you can buy one used for cheap.
As alternatives to the 57, the SM58 and the Audix i5 are similarly priced and have slightly more natural aggressive tones in my experience. If you can pick up a Sennhieser 609, GREAT guitar sound. More energetic sounding than any of the above, but I haven't found anything aside from amps that it sounds good on. Still quite cheap, though, and easily found used.

I want a giant bunny and I want a bunch of regular bunnies and they will form a hive mind and the giant bunny will be the queen bunny and they will attack in swarms.

Isn't an SM58 the same exact thing as SM57, but with a different grill thingy?

I thought 57's were unidirectional and 58's worn't.

I finally got a 57 (ILF Secret Santa Goods!), it's awesome, sounds great.
But......

I combine it with the e609 I've had for a few years now, killer mic, prefer it to the Shure if I had to choose only one GUITAR mic.....
The pair together is perfect!

The other thing to note about the e609 is that because of its flat shape, you don't even need a mic stand or clip - you can just dangle it right over the cab and position it wherever you want on the speaker.

Used Shure unidyne 545

Sounds to me a lot better than the SM57. I got mine around 40-60 EUR (US prices are normally lower).

I think Spacey still has those Shure's, I'm in contact with him about it. It looks like I'll be getting two 57's and a 58. Schnikes- I definitely think in the near future I will be getting one of the e609's for that ability to dangle as well!! Thanks for the help dudes!

Re: Help me choose my first amp mic
As stated above, I use BOTH an SM57 and E609. Great mics, durable, and sound great.
Each one is around $100 and worth it.
